    Welcome Patricia,

    Thank you for your question. The "Quick Start" guide is for those new to FamilySearch, to help them begin building their Family Tree, by guiding them through the basic steps in learning how to use FamilySearch.  If the parents are living, they are needed to make the “bridge” to the deceased individuals, in your family, already in Family Tree. This is done to protect the privacy of living people. You will see the living individuals only if you add their information. Once you get to the first deceased person in each line, you can view all others in that family.
