Hello, with regard to a surname for a child where there is only one parent listed, do I index that surname or not ?

The field help does not mention anything regarding a single parent. Thankyou, Jean.

    Hello Jean

Could you share the Batch so we can see what you are working on?

    Thanks,

    Pam

Hello @jeanmanwaring1 here is the article on how to share the batch so we can see what you are working on and more accurately answer your question.

    https://www.familysearch.org/help/helpcenter/article/how-do-i-share-an-indexing-batch-with-someone

I have a batch open I am working on for the same area which is probably the same project. Although it doesn't specifically state regarding a single parent, the instructions would lead one to understand that if the child doesn't have a last name recorded, you would put the same name which is listed for the parents: "If a surname was not recorded for a child and only 1 surname was recorded for both parents, type the parents' surname in the Surname field for the child and both of the parents." So in this case of a single parent you would put the surname of the parent for the child. But please, for an accurate answer, please share your batch.

Hello, a typical batch as follows : UK Middlesex, England, image 008092505 - 00303

batch id mspz - 2bt. This is a batch which I am just about to work on, the format is the same as the one I enquired about. Thankyou, Jean.

Also regarding Essex, England baptisms [ no batches to index at the moment] there is a registered date,

no baptism date - should I index that instead ? Thank you so much.

Hello Pam, I really think that the 'field help' needs updating even though there are the ' project instructions '.

It is pretty obvious, hence all the questions ! Maybe you are in a position to put this forward to Family Search.

    Regards, Jean.😊

Hello Jean, I am sorry I cannot put anything forward to Family Search. I am a mere volunteer, probably very much like you? Once you do read the Project Instructions though, you can work it out altho an example or two would be very helpful, I agree.

I can't help on the Essex baptisms either as I am not sure what you mean when you say there is no baptism date, only a registered date. Again, without a batch number that you are working on it is hard to comment. I had a look at the Essex Non Conformist records and there was a baptism date but could not see any registered date, so no help here I'm afraid.

    Best regards

    Pam

    Hi jeanmanwaring1

It is possible to escalate difficulties to understand, contradictions or something missing from the project instructions or help field. For his to happen we need Batch code, or URL where the batch is located, the line or entry number where the question is.

When we get questions about a project we ask to hold onto the batch until you hear from us.

Thank you for helping us with indexing.
