Liberia—2008 Census [Part J]

[M3CS-DMW]

The "Relationship to head of household" field accepts only codes 01 - 10, but I'm finding records with numbers outside this range. When a person types what is written in these cases it defaults to 01. I'm reviewing & the indexer for this record entered 03 when 30 is what was written. 03 is probably what the census taker meant. On other records the indexer entered blank when the number was outside the range

Field Help for the Relationship to Head of the Household says "If a numeric code was not recorded, press Ctrl+B to mark this field blank."

The code given is not a valid code so we are in essence not given a code.

Thank you, John Empoliti for your thoughtful comments!

I would suggest accepting Ctrl+B pending guidance from FS Support or fixing the Field to accept values outside the drop-down range. My reasoning follows.

Some of the drop-down Fields for this Project (for example, the localities) do accept a value other than one of the listed choices - for example, the "Birthplace" Field. And there is guidance right on the splash panel that comes up when you first bring up a batch:

    New Locality Lookup Feature!

This project includes the new locality lookup feature.

As you type the locality into the field, suggestions may appear.

If none of the suggestions match what is on the image, simply type what you see and press Tab.

If the suggestion is correct, select it from the list and press Enter to choose it.

The "Head of Household" Field does not claim to accept values that are not in the drop-down list, and sure enough, as you experienced, does not accept them. If this is intentional, then the Project Managers should have provided guidance on what to do in a case like the one you cited, where a value outside the list is recorded on the document. They did it above for Localities.

The Field Help for the "Head of Household" Field says the following quoted below. Maybe one of the Moderators for this can get further guidance on this issue, but in the absence of that, I would accept a blank for that Field if the value recorded is not one of those in the drop-down list. I would amend (or interpret) the instruction below to say "if a numeric code was not recorded or was not in the dropdown list, press Ctrl+B to mark this field blank. @annewandering could you look into this, please? Thanks.

Here is the current Field Help for the "Relationship to Head of Household" Field. It does not address what to do if a value outside the dropdown range is recorded. I suggest Ctrl+B for now, but I would prefer that we were able to index what is recorded, just like for the Localities Fields.

Select the numeric code and corresponding value from the drop-down list.
If a numeric code was not recorded, press Ctrl+B to mark this field blank.
