I am reviewing some Hungarian birth registration records from 1908. They ae very detailed. I have come across one where the following (translated) is written - 'The child was adopted by Pal Strauss '. Only the child'smother was recorded in the 'parents' section. The comment is signed by the registrar and dated 1915. The original indexer has added Pal Strauss as the father but as there is no evidence that he is the natural father should I remove him?

In other records where notes have been added to a christening record where only a mother is mentioned I often see something like 'John Smith acknowledges the child as his own' .

The indexer was correct to index Paul Strauss as the father (unless the project instructions for your project say otherwise). We would also index John Smith in your second example. Thinking about biology isn't important in indexing; Even in the a record that has the names of the biological parents and the adoptive parents, we index the current set of adoptive parents.

    • For multiple parents, such as a set of birth parents and a set of adoptive parents, index only the current set of adoptive parents.
