I have a relative that was born to mom and father, dad died and mom remarried and hereafter he took stepfather's name. His children are listed with stepfather's last name. How do I handle this?

Here is information to help you with directions how to deal with the relative and his mother's marriages...

You can create two records for your family member and list him

with both sets of parents and declare one a step parent. How you do this is

easy. Because we do not have any ID number we will give information as thought just

the mother of your relative was in the tree.

    1.     Log into Family Tree and go to the

mother’s Person Page. Scroll down and add her first marriage and add her first

spouse and death information. This will create a record for him with her.

    2.      Then in the Vital area of her

page scroll down and use the plus add child by clicking on down arrow directly

under the mother's name. Add all other biological children she had with that

spouse before he died that you are asking about.

    3.     Looking at her record again, click

Add spouse again and add her second husband and under that add the relative you

asked about and other children if there were any. If your relative was adopted

or used his stepfather's name as a legal name it is acceptable to also add him

to his mother’s second marriage he is under both sets of parents.

    4.     Now there are two things to do to

    finish answering your question.

First you will need to let FamilySearch know if the relative you

wrote about was adopted, by the second father or if he was just a step-parent

    or guardian.

You will need to go to your relative’s person page. Scroll down to his Vital information where he is listed as a child. When you click the pencil to the right of your relative's name, a new window opens up with a drop down that gives you the relationship choice and a box to give a reason for that declaration.

Second you can also use “Other Information” area of the Person

Page to declare the relationship or your relatives Alternate name if he went by

    the step father’s name.

To declare the relationship be on his mother’s Person Page. Then click on the pencil where he is listed as a child. The new window will let you add the relationship Type. When you declare that  you can also enter the mother’s two marriages and family history in Life Sketch at the top of her Person Page and include her children

Please keep in mind that any records you create for living people

will only be seen by you. So if your relative is living what you write or enter

will only be seen by you. If the relatives mother is deceased and so is he

everything you enter will be seen.

·We hope this will give you further assistance you with your question. Best of Luck. That was a great question!

I believe you can list him with two sets of parents and in the relationships pop up, you can list one father as biological and the other as step-father. He can then decide which set of parents he wish in the eternities.
