Indexing the name of a person and next to the name there is a name of a company the person works for. Do I index that name?

We would index the name or names of the individuals for the Company. In other words, if the name of the company they work for is J. B. Smith and Co., we would make an entry for J B Smith as an individual.

You can find this in the Project Instructions under What to Remember about This Project, the fifth bullet point down:

    • Index names of employers and employees. When indexing business names, index the names of individuals only. For example, "The Ad Book" would not be indexed, but "Barner Kehlenbeck Wines and Liquors" should be indexed. In this case, you would create 2 entries: one for Barner (surname) and another for Kehlenbeck (surname). Do not index occupations or terms such as "banker," "policeman," "M.D.," or similar terms.

Mary Anne, do you have a batch number that we can look at? In the project instructions there is a reference to indexing company names if the Company name has a person's name as a part of the company name. If you can give us a batch number we can look at it and confirm for you.

    Thank you!

City and Business Directories 1749-1990 part C M3W1-94R look at Charles C Smith and maybe Ferdinand C Smith for examples of what I'm asking. Thanks

Can you please confirm the batch number again? When we plug in M3W1-94R we get US, Georgia—Tax Digests, 1787–1900 [Part B] [M3W1-94R] instead of the City and Business Directory project that you mentioned.

    Thank you
