US, Virginia—Marriage Records, 1853–1935 [M3WN-B9K]
I'm indexing Virginia marriages from Danville, Virginia. Instructions say to "Index .... the marriage city and county from the "Marriage Place" column for each couple. If the marriage place or marriage license place was not clearly indicated as city or county, please index the place in the county field." The marriage place on this batch is Danville, Va. with no clear indication if it's a city or county. However, as far as I know, Danville is an independent city. Should I enter it in the marriage place city or county? Any suggestions?

Hi Vicki! Thank you for sharing your batch. Since you know that Danville is a city, you would index it in the city field. On this batch they crossed out the word county and left in the word city in the header. But, even if they hadn't, you could search for Danville, Va and learn it is city. We are allowed to do that.

Thanks, Melissa! I'm never quite sure how much to assume, so it's good to know we're allowed to search out a few things on our own.
