When I put a name in the search box, and put a check mark in the births and christenings, I want results for individuals with that name, NOT the mother/father with that name!

I've been doing searches for a Sophia Mikhailovna, maiden name unknown, who was born in Tulchyn, Vinnytsia, Ukraine in Sept 1888. When I put her first and middle name in the search box, I want birth/christening records for girls by that name, not their mothers with that name. I'm trying to find her parents. How do I get the search results to show the birth results of girls with that name, when I don't know her birth surname?

@Tammy Lynn Driver you have asked how to find birth/christening records (and names of parents) for a child whose surname is unknown. It seems that this would be a most difficult task. However, there are a couple of approaches that may be fruitful.

    Naturalization & Immigration Records

I would suggest that you first try to find naturalization records for both Sophia Mikhailovna and her second husband. Finding this information about her husband may give you clues to where you might look for a marriage record. You suggest that they immigrated to the United States in 1916 via Japan.

    • The main immigration point on the West Coast, in 1916, was Angel Island Immigration Station. You may want to start there. You may find the following website about Angel Island and its records helpful: https://www.aiisf.org/research.
    • You can also get information information about the immigration/naturalization status of Sophia and her husband from the 1920, 1930, and 1940 censuses. You may find the National Archives website, "Clues in Census Records, 1850-1940" helpful: https://www.archives.gov/research/census/1850-1940. Note that the 1940 census has naturalization/immigration information in Column 16.
    • The naturalization process was generally done state-by-state, so it's important to know where your ancestors lived during the period of time in which they obtained their naturalization papers (census records are a great help). We suggest that you might find the following FamilySearch Research Wiki article helpful: "United States Naturalization and Citizenship" (to read, click the title).

    What's in a Name

You might also consider trying to learn what you can from the name of your ancestor, Sophia Mikhailovna; for example, Sophia may have, originally, been spelled Sofia (or something similar). The last part of her middle name, "...ovna" appears to be a patronymic. The following websites may be helpful, if you desire to learn more about the origins of her name:

    https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Ukraine_Personal_Names

    Marriage Records

It would seem that, aside from the Naturalization and Immigration records, it is important that you try to find the marriage records for Sophia's second and first marriage records. These records (especially the record of the first marriage) may provide a maiden name for Sophia. The following websites may help you with this research:

    Ukraine Genealogy : https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Ukraine_Genealogy

    Ukraine Online Genealogy Records: https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Ukraine_Online_Genealogy_Records

I hope that this may be helpful in your search for your Ukrainian ancestors. Best of luck to you.

I know when and where she was born and died. I know the name of her 2nd husband, but not her 1st. I don't know when or where she married either time. I do know when and where her 2 children were born, but not their birth surnames, since they took their step-father's surname when their mother remarried after her 1st husband died between 1911 and 1915. The family immigrated to the US in early 1916 from the Ukraine via Kobe Japan. I have looked for a marriage record for her 2nd marriage using her 2nd husband's name, but haven't found anything.

Records Search on FS has always been annoying this way: it'll cheerfully fill your screen with people with the wrong role, such as parents matching the child you're looking for.

A quick way to get rid of them is to use the filters (below the Update button at the left of the search results). For example, you can filter by Birthplace or Birth Year (Range) to get rid of all the non-births. Just the first layer of filters will do for this purpose, generally.

I found their immigration and naturalization records. They immigrated through Seattle Washington. Leo died in 1923, so he wasn't naturalized. He'd filed his intention to naturalize, but hadn't completed the process. Sophia did. She would have married the 1st time 1904-08. No records that late on FS. Latest record for a birth is 1853 for Tulchyn on FS is 1853. She was born in 1888.
