Note, I tried to access existing answers on this but the system denied me permission. Not sure what that is about.

I am working on reviewing a batch of US, Kansas - Naturalization Records. I have come across to different documents that Affidavit of Witness and Oath of Allegiance on the same document. The instructions says to not index the Affidavit of Witness. However, instructions say to index the Oath of Allegiance. All the pertinent information for the person is in the Affidavit of Witnesses. What do I do? Thanks.

Ignore the Affidavit of Witness and index only the Oath of Allegiance. Generally that will include only a name and date.

For a better answer to your question, please share your batch.

When we index we are creating an accurate index card that links the researcher to the record.

Here are some reasons why we need a batch code or a URL link where the batch is located.

The batch code allow us to see what you are seeing, to look into the project instructions, fiel help, example images on how to index this project and if we don't have the answer we can also research it with others for a correct answer for your question.

We suggest also to not submit the batch until you hear from us.

Hope this clarifies the importance of a batch code or number, or URL

I am working on these. Click on the example in the project instructions - How To Index An Oath of Allegiance. As Dellory says, we only index the information from the Oath - a name and a date, and sometimes only a name when no date is recorded.

    • Please note this por this Batch: US, Kansas—Naturalization Records, 1856–1991 [Part A][M373-GCQ]

Project Instruction on What to index:

    • Index the following 5 types of naturalization documents: certificates of naturalization, declarations of intention, petitions for naturalization, oaths of allegiance, and naturalization cards. Any documents that are similar to these 5 and that are not listed below as an image to not index, should also be indexed. If a document does not have a title or heading, look at other information on the document to determine the document type.
    • Do not index name change records, certificates of loyalty, certificates of arrival, affidavits of witnesses, or depositions. These images should be marked in Step 1: Images as No, No Extractable Data.

    Therefore:

Image 1 is a petition for naturalization- yes, to Index

Image 2 is affidavit of witness and oat of allegiance: Yes to index, only the Oat of allegiance should be indexed.

Image 3: Interrogatories in deposition of witnesses continue to next image- Should not be indexed as per project instructions-These images should be marked in Step 1: Images as No, No Extractable Data.

Image 4: Interrogatories in deposition of witnesses: Should not be indexed as per project instructions-These images should be marked in Step 1: Images as No, No Extractable Data.

Thank you for consulting and for providing the batch link.
