Find person in my tree.

Your issue is connected to a misunderstanding many users have of the structure of Family Tree. It does not contain "my tree" or "your tree", but is one massive tree, meant to contain a single entry (ID) for every individual identified that lived on this earth.
So, what you are encountering here is a situation where either:
(1) The source has been merely attached to the wrong person (i.e. probably someone of similar identity to your relative) or
(2) It has been attached to a "duplicate" of your relative - that needs to be "merged" with the person whose record you have entered / have knowledge of In Family Tree.
If you are unfamiliar with this terminology, or the process whereby your individual / family branch can be merged with another (of exact same identity) that exists within Family Tree, please come back here. I'm sure an experienced user will be able to direct you to FamilySearch articles that will assist you in the next steps you might need to take (in order to resolve your issue).

I don't get these "Recommended Tasks" as there is nothing to connect my ID (which I keep as "stand alone" - i.e. not connected to my relatives in Family Tree), so I don't really know how much detail you are receiving when you get these hints.
Sorry if I misunderstood your problem. I was thinking about the results I get when making a search myself. From the example shown below, I would have the date and place of the event, then click on the Family Tree icon alongside, which reveals the ID to which it has been attached.
If what you get from Recommended Tasks is rather vague, I can see my advice would not help, as you wouldn't be able to make a similar search from the detail received via that channel.
If your hint provides at least some detail, you can go perform a search and find if the record / source has already been attached to your relative (or another - perhaps incorrect - individual) by clicking on the icon in the far right-hand column.

Great Answer Paul W. I thought of a third possibility: You are not the only one getting a message that there is a record hint for that individual. Other users of FamilySearch are also being notified, which means that another relative may have gotten the same notification and already attached the record hint to the individual in Family Tree. I find that happens frequently in my experience.

The problem is seeing the hint and it is a familiar name, but it's not attached to my person, and the name is a name common throughout my ancestry. I don't want to have to search through both sides of my family among the thousands of people to find the right person to see what's up. I guess I can ignore the hints under recommended tasks.

It sounds like you are looking at the Recommended Tasks list from the Home Page when you first log into FamilySearch.org. You can click on the name of the individual on your list and go to their Details page. From there you can click on "View My Relationship" and see how they are related to you. Is that what you want to know?

Here is an article about how to view that relationship from the Details page of an ancestor

Turns out that things were a bit messed up. The person I was given the hint for was indeed part of my family, but her last name had been Interpreted (?) incorrectly and so she was confused with the person whose name the hint belonged to. I was able to check my tree on Ancestry (where they have a "find a person on this tree" help) and find a death certificate and see than an "S" was misinterpreted as an "L". I had several things going wrong that day and was extremely frustrated.
Thanks for helping out.
