The 1910 census project is a disaster.

What if the project instead of creating untold duplicates would create lists of 1910 census persons not linked to any tree for each county in the country then refer the list to genealogy groups or perhaps church members in each county. There is nothing like "local feet on the ground" for accurate and complete genealogy.

So often, a local researcher can look at a mis-spelled or badly butchered family name and give a correct or preferred spelling.

I hate to think what could be coming with a similar project for 1920, 1930, etc.

I am not a member of the church, but really appreciate the familysearch tree and have been working for more than 4 years to make my small part of the tree as accurate, complete and well sourced as possible.

Everytime I research a family and see that the 1910 Project has added sources, I know that I have a big clean up job facing me because you cannot add people to FamilySearch from one record, disregarding other records that might pertain to that person, and not have duplicates. This project is a very BAD idea and is causing unnecessary duplication and confusion in the wiki tree. I wish they would stop! This kind of simplistic "research" has always resulted in poor and misleading information in the tree. No experienced researcher could ever think this was a good idea! PLEASE STOP!

My impression is the 1910 Project participants are the newest of newbie contributors. At least they are being taught how to attach sources. And FamilySearch official guidance is that when in doubt, create a new profile rather than merge or attach sources where they do not belong.

So, I try to be very, very patient with these contributors even though at times I am very annoyed by their rampant duplicates.

I've been merging duplicates for weeks from this Project. Today iced it for me. I was attaching a source to a woman with her children, but with no husband. The source linker brought up 5 possible husbands for her, of the same name. No dates, no sources, Each with a different child. All from the Project. None of the chldren the same as the original family. How could I possibly know if they belong to this family!!! I don't dare create my own husband/father for fear the mess will just get worse! Do I dare continue? As frustrating as this is to users of Family Search, how must those waiting for their ordinances to be done, be feeling? "Yes, I'm up, oh no, I'm not......"

The project attaches historical records. Look at the attachments.

    dontiknowyou,

I'm sorry. There are no attachments to identify these men and their child, and that is the problem. But I must apologize, the 5 suggested possible husbands don't say they are from the project, it is the mother and her children that were put into Family Search by the project.

For you who have commented recently, these are NOT newbies making innocent mistakes. This is a BYU sponsored project, I contacted someone there and complained. You might be able to scroll back and read about it. No remorse and I fear they will do something like this again.

I was disappointed to receive an email from FamilySearch inviting me to participate in the 1910 Project.

I believe the 1910 Project is an ill-conceived idea.

Every family I have researched who has had the 1910 Census attached  by this project has had duplicate spouses and children added to the family that I have had to merge to clean up the family and to stop further duplication of temple ordinances.

This activity is teaching very poor research skills. As a research consultant at FamilySearch I encourage guests to RESEARCH RESPONSIBLY by throughly documenting a person before adding them to FamilySearch, especially if they lived in a time period when many documents and resources are available. Many times thorough research using the tools and partner subscriptions provided by the church shows that the person in question is already in the system.

    PLEASE STOP THIS SENSELESS PROJECT!!!!
