Why are people changing names/relationships/information that I have entered for MY family members.

My Father is Chauncey Young; not Chauncey Young Jr.

My Father's wife is Vera Beverly Varney; not Veda Beverly Varney, who is my mother's twin and married to Charles Young, my father's brother.

It is extremely frustrating when I see incorrect changes to correct information I have entered

I agree it is very frustrating but I have found that helping someone else realise they have got their family wrong is a little satisfying. I have been blessed many times as you then look over what you have for that family member.

The goal of Family Tree is to help bring families together by creating the best-sourced, public genealogical Family Tree in the world. This requires a lot of collaboration and, as a result, means dealing with a lot of errors.

When you come across inconsistencies, keep in mind that inadvertent errors in dates, names, sources, relationships, and other items are not considered abuse. Another contributor may simply be using different data sources. Feel free to correct them when you can and to provide the best sourced information. You can also:

    • Correct errors by working with other contributors.
    • Use the Discussions feature to post research information for other collaborators.
    • Use the Watch feature to notify you when any changes are made to a record.
    • See the articles linked at the bottom for more detailed instructions on how to perform these tasks.

If you have questions regarding inadvertent, suspicious or potentially malicious errors in records that you are unable to resolve per the instructions above, contact  FamilySearch Support .

Family Search is a collabrative tree and therefore others do have access to your ancestors as they may have the same ancestors as you. Try to message the person to ask them to remove the incorrect information or you may be able to edit it yourself.

    Hope this helps.

    @NSchwarz

    Welcome to the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum.

    I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron ...

I, 'hear' you; and, 'understand' your 'pain' ...

Many of us have ... been there, done that ... and, still do ...

Furthermore, to what has already been proffered 'Judith' ...

Here is a "Knowledge Article" in 'FamilySearch':

How can I prevent other people from making inaccurate changes to Family Tree?

    https://www.familysearch.org/help/helpcenter/article/how-can-i-prevent-other-people-from-making-inaccurate-changes-to-family-tree

    https://www.familysearch.org/help/helpcenter/article/how-can-i-prevent-other-people-from-making-inaccurate-changes-to-family-tree

Of course, one can NEVER really PREVENT other Users/Patrons from making INACCUARTE "Changes" in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.

    But ...

    That said ...

One may be, at least, able to HELP other Users/Patrons 'see' the 'error of their ways' ...

Whereas ... STOP them ... Unfortunately, NOT.

    As an aside ...

Here an old 'standby' of mine, that I have previously proffered on occasion ...

    -----

Most new (and, some old) Users/Patrons DO NOT understand the basic 'nature' and 'premise' of "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch', when they join in.

    Please let me explain ...

We do not have our OWN "Tree" in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.

We ONLY have "Branches" (ie. Ancestral" lines), that are interconnected, in this SINGLE "One" World "Tree", for all of us, that is "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.

"Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' is NOT like 'On-Line' "Websites" (eg. "Ancestry_com"; or "MyHeritage_com"; or, the like); and/or, 'standalone' personal (computer) programmes (eg, the OLD, now no longer supported, "PAF"; or, "Ancestral Quest"; or, the like).

We DO NOT have "Private"/"Personal" 'Trees' in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' like other 'On-Line' "Websites"; and/or, 'standalone' personal (computer) programmes.

We do not even, own; or, manage; and, are NOT even responsible for, the "Deceased" individuals/persons in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.

    And, most importantly ...

We DO NOT even, own; or, manage; and, are NOT even responsible for, Our OWN "Deceased" Ancestors/Family/Relatives in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.

"Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' is built on a "Open Edit" Platform - hence, why any registered User/Patron can "Edit" (ie. Add, Delete; and/or, Change) ANY "Deceased" individual/person in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.

    -----

The aforementioned is WHY so MANY Users/Patrons MAINTAIN their OWN "Working" COPY of their "Ancestral" lines [ie. their, OWN. "Personal"; and, sometimes, often, "Private", DATBASE(S), on, 'On-Line' "Websites" (eg. "Ancestry_com"; or "MyHeritage_com"; or, the like); and/or, 'standalone' personal (computer) programmes (eg, the OLD, now no longer supported, "PAF"; or, "Ancestral Quest"; or, the like).

A number of those, on 'On-Line' "Websites"; or, 'standalone' personal (computer) programmes, are "Third Party" Applications that are "Certified" to work (INTERFACE) with "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.

"Third Party" Applications that are "Certified" to work (INTERFACE) with "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' can be found in the "Solutions Gallery" of 'FamilySearch'.

Here is a direct link to the "Solutions Gallery" of 'FamilySearch':

    https://partners.familysearch.org/solutionsgallery/s/

And, here is the direct link to the "Family Tree Management programmes" themselves:

    https://partners.familysearch.org/solutionsgallery/s/list?category=family_tree_management

Some of the "Third Party" Applications that are "Certified" to work with "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' have, BOTH, a Basic FREE version; and/or, a Premium PIAD (ie. "Subscription") version, the latter just having more 'Bells and Whistles'. The Basic FREE version is sufficient for most, the average, User/Patron. Whereas, the Premium PAID (ie. "Subscription") version is the choice of most experienced and 'power' Users/Patrons.

You can use ONE or MORE than one, of the the "Third Party" Applications, the choice is yours.

Most of the "Third Party" Applications that are "Certified" to work with "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' that are "Family Tree Management programmes, have INTERFACES that work/connect (directly) with "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' that can, "Download"; and, "Upload" (ie. "Transfer", both, Data; and, individuals/persons) between, the "Third Party" Application; and, "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.

I certainly know that this does not help; but, I hope this gives you some more perspective.

    Brett

    Hello NSchwarz

Another thing you might consider, sometimes historical documents reverse the order of the given name, or the spelling of a name,  so it might be useful to add the other name sequence to the Other Information section, as an alternate name. You can find the Other Information section below the Vital Information. Click “Add Information” and choose 'Alternate Name' at the top of the list.

If you cannot use the link to contact support about your problem then I suggest you leave feedback to familysearch located just at the bottom of this page on the left hand side. I appreciate you letting me know about the link not working although there are phone numbers to contact support on that link.

Hope you have your issue resolved.

    Judith

    FYI

You do not seem to understand, the nature, of the 'Comment' by 'Paul' ...

Please be aware that, that "Link" to "FamilySearch Support" (ie. https://familysearch.org/ask/help ) that you provided, in your original 'Comment', is NO LONGER a, "Current"; and / or, "Active", link.

Selecting that particular link, results in ...

    Unexpected Error _ OLD _ Help _ 0 _ 29 June 2021.jpg

The, "Current"; and / or, "Active", link, to contact "Support" of 'FamilySearch', is that, as per 'Paul', has provided.

    I hope this helps.

    Brett

ps: By the way, you can, "Edit", your original 'Comment'; and, simply, change/correct that particular link.
