When I go to Live Chat it says "Waiting for an Agent" I could sit there for hours not knowing if there is anyone there. You need to put a progress icon that indicates that there is really someone. Acknowledge if I am #1 or what ever in que. I waited 35 minutes yesterday and just gave up

If you wish to use the Chat feature in North America, it is available during the hours of operation listed on the Contact Us page, however, keep in mind that as you identify which part of the FamilySearch site you need help with, if a chat agent is not available for that specialty [Indexing, Family Tree, Historical Records, etc.], you may have a very long wait.
Hours for Support, as well as for other parts of the World are listed on the Contact Us page.
I appreciate your idea about allowing a progress icon to keep guests updated on the status of their chat request. Would you consider posting that idea in the Community Share an Idea category where it can be viewed by others? When you have suggestions and ideas that would make the FamilySearch Community better for all of us, it is wonderful to use that category rather than the General Category to share ideas.1
