Blended family issue with census records and attaching individuals

A 2nd cousin of mine was married to a man who's half brother has the same mother, and younger half brother's father is the younger brother of his half brother's father.

So the two brothers share the same last name.

But when it comes to attaching census records the software wants to attach the deceased brother to the living brother. I would think the software would look at the date of the census and the death date of the person it is attempting to attach to someone still alive at that time. It doesn't.

If I detach the person, the next time I look the dead brother is attached to the living brother as the same person.

The wife had 8 children by the second husband and the software also doesn't seem to know how to attach the children to the living children in the census records. It keeps attaching them to the record, but not to the actual person.

Does anyone know how to make these attachments work correctly.
