Will the 1950 Census be available for indexing in April of 2022?
I would love for our Relief Society to participate in indexing the 1950 US Census. We hope to prepare our sisters for this project by helping them to become more familiar with indexing in the days/months ahead. Are there any current projects that would be similar in nature, that we could direct them to for practice?
Thank you.

Hi Emily. I don't know how much like the 1950 US Census it will be, but here is a current and enjoyable census project:
Liberia—2008 Census [Part H]

To answer your first question, NARA, who owns the 1950 census, has confirmed that digital copies will be made public on 1 April 2022. I expect that FamilySearch and other genealogical organizations will start indexing soon after. However I wouldn't be surprised if handwriting recognition software was used to replace or supplement indexing. I don't think FamilySearch has yet announced how the 1950 census will be indexed.

Please let me know. I would like to assist with indexing the 1950 Census.

We are all anxiously waiting to see when this will happen. It will be well publicized so keep your eyes open for that date!

Family Search sponsored a contest for genealogy societies to compete for most records indexed. I believe that was one of the reasons the projected finish date of six months happened in four. Wondering if there are plans to repeat this time around?

I sure hope there isn't a contest. These often lead to quantity over quality.
