In some batches that I index, I notice that someone's first name will be "Jas." or "Thos". Although I can't assume what their name is, I am sure the (.)period is there to indicate an apostrophe their name? So "Jas" is probably Jason, but although I index it as "Jas" I assume, my actual question is, do I add the period in from of Jas or Thos or do I leave it out on the Given Name field?

Thanks

Punctuation is not necessary, but if you want to include it, you may. Personally, I don't.

It's up to the researcher to determine that Jas = James and Thos = Thomas.
