HELP - how to do this??? US—City and Business Directories, 1749–1990 [Part C] [M3WV-F61]
am working on a batch from Rock County Wis - The way they are listed is kinda weird!!
example: """Esnor, James [Maude L St John] ch LeRoy, Grace, Edith; Broadhead Rt 1 Magnolia Sec 36 Dr W T Hoyt(1912)"""
is wife added to James or a seperate entry & if so, do I include maiden name? Are children added & what is the DR Hoyt doing there & do I add him??
There is no clear example in project instructions ??
What to do - what to do---???
Thanks as ever!!! I will NOT let this defeat me!!!

How do you know they are from Rock County, Wisconsin? I can't find that on the image.
Below is a link to one of the Prairie Farmer's Reliable Directories. If you look at the 31st image, it will give you an example of what this means. I think "Sec. 35 T140a Dr. W T Hoyt (1912)" means that Esnor is a tenant farmer with 140 acres on Dr W T Hoyt's land since 1912. So you would index Dr W T Hoyt.
Maude would be entered on her husband James record as Spouse's Given Name: Maude L and Spouse's Surname: St John. The children would be indexed separately with only their given names.

Maybe this will help:
Abbreviations: a = acres; Ch = Children; O = Owner; T = Tenant or Renter; R = Rural Route; Sec = Section
Maiden name of Wife follows in parenthesis. Figures at the end of information -- year became a resident.
Star * indicates children not at home.
Name of Farm follows names of Children in quotation marks.
In case of a tenant, the farm owner's name follows the figures giving the size of the farm.
The very last piece of information is the name of the telephone.
Since we are indexing each unique name: We index the first name and can add the spouse's name on that record. The children's names are indexed separately. The owner of the farm would also be indexed.

@Cassady, Holleen Hope Directory Place would be Rock. You wouldn't put the word "county" per the General Indexing General Indexing Guidelines. You wouldn't put Wisconsin as that isn't listed on the header with Rock. Also when you put the doctor's name, just put the name and not his title. The project instructions state "Do not index occupations or terms such as "banker," "policeman," "M.D.," or similar terms." Best of luck and thank you for indexing these records!

@Cassady, Holleen Hope We cannot use outside sources to index information. We can only index what is on the image. In this case, you can only type Rock in the Directory Place field.
I know it is so hard as Family Historians to switch tasks to being Indexers and Reviewers. But, as Indexers and Reviewers, we are only creating an index of the information that is seen on the document. We Type What We See, and in the same light, We DON'T Type What We Don't See.
Hope that helps explain this.

We have the same question on
US—City and Business Directories, 1749–1990 [Part C][M3WV-FX3]
It is a Farmers directory and it appears that there are other family members listed. Possibly a wife in Parenthesis and maybe children or grandchildren that are listed in that house hold. See the snipit below.
We may need to update the project instructions with information on these Farmers directory's and a sample.

I know that it is Rock Co Wisconsin due to the fact that 15 of the familes are all buried in 1 of 3 cemeteries in Rock Co Wis & their names appear on other City Directories & tax lists.
