I have been working on Virginia birth records. At the top of the page it gives the county and at in the information it gives the records as Virginia birth records. So in the space of the Fathers state I have been putting Virginia. Is this right or should I be leaving it empty because the information is not on the record itself?

You leave the county blank if it isn't in the actual column for the Place of Birth. The field help for that field tells us: Do not assume the name of the county from other information in the document, such as the name of the town or city. Do not index the county listed in the header of the register.

So, even if the header says, Montgomery County, but the Place of Birth is listed as Blacksburg - you only record Blacksburg.

If the Father's residence place happened to have Virginia, or Va handwritten in the residence column then you could record the state. But, without it written there you render the field blank. The field help is the same for this field.

Field helps are found by clicking on the purple question mark that appears when you click on the field.
