How to correctly enter a child's name
Hello all
I'm asking this question as a relative has entered the daughter's name of our common great-grandfather with a different surname - the child thus appears twice.
Surely the correct entry format for a daughter is for her surname to be that of her parents and not of her future husband - correct or not ?
Which leads onto the entry for a wife's name which surely should be her maiden's name - correct?
Are there common guidelines for entering names and other data?

Further to what has already been proffered by 'dduncan' and 'Paul W' ...
Short Answers: 'Yes'; and, 'Yes'; and, 'Yes'.
The "Name" in the "Vitals" Section should ALWAYS be that at "Birth"
(or, "Christening"/"Baptism" for Children, prior to 'Civil Registration); and,
be the "Birth" (ie. "Maiden") 'Family Name'/Surname', for a Female/Woman;
UNLESS, there has been a LEGAL Name "Change".
ANY non-legal Name "Usage"/"Changes" should generally always appear under "Alternate Names", in the "Other Information" Section, which includes the "Married" 'Family Name'/Surname', for a Female/Woman.
[ or, even, if the Couple, choose a DUAL 'Hyphenated' "Married" 'Family Name'/Surname' ... ]

Ingrese en la sección de Información esencial la versión correcta del nombre.
En la sección de Informacióm esencial, ingrese el nombre al nacer o el nombre legal completo de la persona.
- Uso de mayúsculas— Utilice mayúsculas normales.
- Nombres de solteras y casados— Si una mujer cambia su apellido después del matrimonio, use su apellido de soltera.
- Cambios de nombre legal— Si una persona cambió su nombre legalmente (aparte de los cambios de apellido después del matrimonio), ingrese el nombre legal más nuevo.
- Nombre más utilizado—Si la persona no usó su nombre legal en la vida, puede ingresar el nombre de uso común en la sección de Información esencial y el nombre legal en la sección Otra información.
Coloque cada parte del nombre en el campo correcto
- Título— Utilice Título para palabras como "Contar" o "Señor". Si una persona carece de un título, deje este campo en blanco.
- Nombres— Ingrese los nombres y los apellidos de la persona. Coloque los sobrenombres en la sección de "Otra información."
- Apellidos— Ingrese el apellido o nombre familiar de la persona. Si una mujer cambió su apellido después de casarse, ingrese su apellido de soltera. Si la persona no tiene apellido, como los nativos americanos, deje en blanco el campo de Apellido.
- Sufijo— Ingrese palabras como "Jr." o "Sr.", o tal vez un número romano, como en "Juan Smith III". Si una persona carece de sufijo, deje este campo en blanco.

Yes, the name should be entered as her maiden name. The general "rule" is to enter the birth name. The common exception to this is when an individual was / is known by another name from infancy. As an example, if a woman has a child, it was registered / baptised with her surname, but she married soon after and the child took the name of the stepfather. Some users still argue the case for inputting the birth name in Family Tree, but I believe it best to use the name the individual will be found listed as throughout their life (especially if male) and add the birth name under Other Information, as an Alternate Name. With females, you might wish to add the married name as an Alternate Name, as you might find this of help in the "new" way the Search routines work.

I wonder why you stress, "The "Name" in the "Vitals" Section should ALWAYS be that at "Birth...."?
Both articles for which you provide links make the input conditional on the factor:
"If the person did not use the legal name in life, you have the option to enter the commonly used name in the Vitals section and the legal name in the Other Information section."
I know you, and many other users, do have strong feelings over always using the birth name in the Vitals section, but (as both articles make clear) it is not correct that we have to do this.

I am good, I know how to get the "Name" (or, "Names") that are needed.
For Church purposes, we WANT the "Name" to be CORRECT ...
