WHY do WE have to KEEP Resetting Our SETTINGS eg -> Preferences -> OnLine Preferences, in the Forum

FamilySearch

Question:

WHY do WE have to KEEP "Resetting" OUR "Settings"; in particular, "Preferences", and, specifically, "On-Line Preferences" [ie. (aka) Who's Online], in this "Community.FamilySearch" Forum?

I have 'Set', My 'On-Line' Status to "Hide", on a number of occasions now!

And, yet, that DOES NOT seem to be "Staying"/"Sticking"; as, 'Set'.

Or, for WHATEVER reason, this seems to KEEP being 'nullified' ...

Community _ FamilySearch _ Preferences _ Hide On-Line Status _ 0.jpg

WHEN we 'Set' OUR "Settings", they SHOULD remain as WE 'Set' them, until WE go in; and, "Change" those "Settings!

OUR "Settings" should NOT be "Changed", by anyone, except OURSELVES; and, in particular, NOT by the "System", automatically.

WHAT is going on?

As an aside ...

FYI

I particularly noticed this situation, this morning, Tuesday, the Day AFTER, the regular ('Scheduled') Weekly 'Update'/Release' in 'FamilySearch', of Sunday 'Night'/Monday 'Morning' ( 'Mountain Time').

Perhaps, it is those regularly ('Scheduled') Weekly 'Updates'/Releases' in 'FamilySearch' of Sunday 'Night'/Monday 'Morning' ( 'Mountain Time') that are CAUSING this Problem/Issue.

Please, investigate; and, rectify, as soon as possible.

'Thank You' in advance.

Submitted for your immediate, information; attention; and, consideration.

Kind Regards.

MAY THE LORD BLESS YOU IN THIS IMPORTANT WORK

Yours Faithfully,

Brett

    @Mark McLemore

    Mark

    FYI

    It happened AGAIN, (ie. NO LONGER "Hidden" ... );

[ Checked my "Online Preferences"; somehow, UNCHECKED, again ... this is NOT right/good ... ]

    But ...

    That said ...

This time there was NO ('Regular') "Weekly" Update/Release ...

Perhaps, this occurred due to an (ie. some) ad-hoc "In-Line" Update/Release, by a 'Programmer' ...

It is NOW, the Morning of Thursday, 27 May 2021.

It was just FINE, all day yesterday, Wednesday, 26 May 2021.

[ I KNOW; as, I have been checking up on it ... ]

    'Thank You' in advance.

Submitted for your IMMEDIATE, information; attention; and, consideration.

Hey @Brett . - couple of questions for you. Did you check the box just now to hide your online status? Also, have you by chance noticed if you are actually showing online when it is selected?

    @Mark McLemore

    Mark

'Yes', I DID "Hide" my "Online Preferences", just AFTER sending my response to you.

    And ...

The reason I noticed that I was visible 'On-Line' AGAIN, was that I saw myself; as, being 'On-Line" (ie. in "Who's Online in this Category" ).

    Whereas,

After, I "Hide" my "Online Preferences" again, I 'refreshed'; and, noticed that I was NO LONG 'On-Line" (ie. in "Who's Online in this Category" ).

Sure seems that is it NOT that Weekly 'Update' / Release' in 'FamilySearch' ...

[ As, it was O.K. last time too ... ]

This time ... lets wait and 'see' ...

I will keep checking; and, advise if I notice anything untoward ...

    Mark

    FYI

    It JUST happened AGAIN,

ie. NO LONGER "Hidden" ... I saw that I was there in "Who's Online in this Category"

It is NOW, the Morning of Wednesday, 23 June 2021 ( My 'Local' Time ) - the Day AFTER ...

I just saw that I was "On-Line" ... when I should NOT have been ...

I then checked My "Online Preferences"; somehow, UNCHECKED, again ... getting somewhat 'monotonous' ...

Yesterday, Tuesday, 22 June 2021, I "Changed" My "Online Preferences" BACK to "Hide my online status from other members", AGAIN ...

And, I DID NOT "Un-Check" and "Save" My "Online Preferences" ...

I, have yet AGAIN, "Changed" My "Online Preferences" BACK to "Hide my online status from other members".

    Definitely becoming a nuisance ...

WHAT is CASUING such to happen?

    As an aside ...

    ALSO ...

Although, I have (and, use) that Feature/Function/Facility of "Keep me signed in for 2 weeks" activated ...

    This morning [ Wednesday, 23 June 2021 ( My 'Local' Time ) ] ...

I was NOT only required to "Sign In" with my "User Name" and "Password" in 'FamilySearch' ...

But, I was ALSO required to "Sign In" into the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum ...

I should NOT have had to do so in the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum, for some time ...

SOMETHING "Major" (ie. "In-Line") was afoot ... to have caused the aforementioned ...

    Just saying ...

    'Thank You' in advance.

Submitted for your IMMEDIATE, information; attention; and, consideration.

    Kind Regards.

@Brett . We have not been able to pin down why exactly this is happening, which makes it difficult to troubleshoot/identify the root cause, but we are actively investigating why this keeps occurring.

I’ll dig into the sign in item you noted above. I noticed this behavior as well - the behavior should be consistent, and you should not have to click sign in again to log in to the community.

    Mark

Something, for you to 'mulled over', in relation to this latest occurrence ...

Today ( Wednesday, 23 June 2021 ); as, I have been trying to get back to my own research ...

I have had to "Sign In", to MANY of the various "Partner" Accounts, to which I am "Connected" ...

    [ Such is usually/generally NOT required ... ]

This is the FIRST time, that I have had to do such, with ALL, at the same time.

Usually, it is ONLY one, every-so-often - usually after some MAJOR 'Shake Up' with the particular Partner site.

Certainly, not ALL at the same time ...

    Just ... 'food for thought'

    Mark

This is beyond a joke ...

    NEXT Day ...

    Thursday, 24 June 2021 ...

After, I had ALREADY had to "Sign Into" EVERYTHING just YESTERDAY ...

    SAME, Same ... again ... Today ...

    And ...

    To make matters worse ...

Of course, I 'see' that I was "On-Line" again ... when I should NOT have been ...

I will ONCE AGAIN "Change" My "Online Preferences" BACK to "Hide my online status from other members".

    WHAT is going on ...

    @Mark McLemore

    Mark

    Well beyond a joke ...

    Now ...

    Thursday, 1 July 2021 ...

Everything, was just fine, as of Yesterday; and, even as late as this MORNING (Today) ...

    Whereas ...

Now ... after NOON ... SAME, Same ... again ...

I 'see' that I was "On-Line" again ... when I should NOT have been ...

I will ONCE AGAIN "Change" My "Online Preferences" BACK to "Hide my online status from other members".

Surely, there must be some ROOT cause ...

Maybe it is something to do with the "Vanilla" Network side of things; and, not so much 'FamilySearch'!?

    ie.

When, the Company for "Vanilla", makes a "Change" (ie. addresses/fixes something), that bypasses the INTERFACE (and, "Security") with 'FamilySearch'

    Just a thought.

    Mark

Sorry for the belated notice ...

It happend AGAIN Yesterday [ ie. Saturday, 17 July 2021 - my local time (+10 UTC) ].

When I got up yesterday, I found that I was VISIBLE 'On-Line' in the this "Community.FamilySearch" Forum, when I should NOT have been.

I then checked My "Online Preferences"; somehow, UNCHECKED, again ...

I once again IMMEDIATELY "Change" My "Online Preferences" BACK to "Hide my online status from other members".

    Whereas ...

This morning, today, Sunday, 18 July 2021 [ my local time (+10 UTC) ], I am still "Hidden".

I wonder, what; and/or, who, is making that "Setting" get OVERRIDDEN!?

    @Mark McLemore

    Mark

It happened again a few days ago; but, I was a little too preoccupied to advise - same, same, as the previous.

    But ...

    That Said ...

It happened again LATE this morning; and, this may help, track it down ...

LATE Last Night, through, to the EARLY Hours (3-4 am) of this Morning, my Local 'Time' (UTC+10)-all was good

Then, after a few Hours sleep, about 8:30 am this Morning, my Local 'Time' (UTC+10) - STILL, all was good.

But, later, at about 10:30 am this Morning, my Local 'Time' (UTC+10) - NOT so good

'All of a Sudden', visible again.

I immediately "Change" My "Online Preferences" BACK to "Hide my online status from other members".

    That worked.

    Now ...

    That Said ...

I just wonder, if ANY "In-Line" Update/Release, was applied (ie. occurred, being undertaken), by a Programmer/Engineer, around that 'Time' of 10:30 am ("±" a bit) this Morning, my Local 'Time' (UTC+10)!?

Or, even a, "Back-End" Process, Job!?

    Just a thought.

    Mark

    FYI

Today, Tuesday, 10 August 2021 (my local 'Time = UTC +10).

    Interesting ...

Up until I was working with you ... all was good ...

    Then, just after 'midday' ...

'All of a Sudden', visible again.

I immediately "Change" My "Online Preferences" BACK to "Hide my online status from other members".

    That worked.

    Now ...

    That Said ...

The Weekly 'Update' / Release' in 'FamilySearch' of Sunday 'Night' / Monday 'Morning' ( 'Mountain Time')

Was yesterday Monday AFTERNOON, 9 August 2021, at 16:00 Hours/4pm, My LOCAL 'Time' ...

All was good, first thing, this morning.

I just wonder, if ANY "In-Line" Update/Release, was applied (ie. occurred, being undertaken), by a Programmer/Engineer, around that 'Time' of Noon ("±" a bit) this Morning, my Local 'Time' (UTC+10)!?

Or, even a, "Back-End" Process, Job!?

OR, just maybe, when you were 'Shadowing' me, while I was doing that "Testing"!?

    Just a thought.
