Computer Assisted Fix-It Tools
The power of FamilySearch makes it relatively easy to make errors which can become compound tangled problems. Fixing these compound tangled ancestors can be very tedious, time consuming and error prone (at least in my case), often taking hours and even days. Currently this type of work is done on paper, spreadsheet or word processing programs, the beta system or other genealogy packages. Whereas, a computer could conduct many of the tasks associated with this repair process much easier, faster, and more accurately than can be done manually. Computer assisted tools could:
- Help identify inconsistencies/problems/errors in the Tree and sources of an ancestor.
- In complex situations, help identify viable persons and supporting sources within the tangled compound person and
- In complex situations, help extract a person, vitals, family and sources from a tangled compound person.

People familiar with databases support use of databases instead of spreadsheets for many reasons. People familiar with spreadsheets of course prefer spreadsheets. It is often possible to provide data in a format that is relatively neutral, such as CSV.
What about GEDCOM? I do not know much about it but I know it is a data format designed explicitly for genealogical purposes. I assume GEDCOM can be imported into spreadsheets and databases. And existing GEDCOM tools could be used.
Family Search currently does not provide data downloadable in GEDCOM format but it would help if they did.
