Hi Carolyn,
Stiles Brown's LT1X-S24 parents are shown as Ichabod Gardner Brown and Roxie D. Metcalf in Family Search.org. There is no documentation attached to prove this.

Yes, I know this. It makes me question the credibility of an organization that would allow for this.

I hope I didn't come across as rude. I am looking for a document that provides the names of Ichabod Gardner Brown's children. Is Stiles Brown born 1827 in Ohio (according to census reports) his son? I have not been able to find any documentation concerning Ichabod. Did he move from Herkimer to Ohio? I appreciate your help and look forward to hearing from you. Thanks. Carolyn

The way to locate such a document has the same difficulty for all of us - well, maybe with the exception of anyone who is an expert in, say, Ohio historical records. Firstly, you need to check the FamilySearch Catalog section. Type in "Ohio", or more specific place names, to see if FamilySearch has any records that might be relevant to your searches. Failing any success there, you could visit commercial websites (e.g. Ancestry) or use Google to see what results it might produce.
From a brief look myself, it appears that there might not be any surviving, published public records that would produce the information you need. This situation is met by all of us sooner or later. I have come across various reasons that a set of records is no longer available: destroyed by fire or flood, severely damaged by rats, or even removed from the repository and never returned.
Hopefully, you will get somewhere here, but we often reach a dead-end in our genealogical research much earlier than we would have wished.

Hi Carolyn,
There are good reasons why such entries are allowed...but they should be followed up with some kind of sources. Sometimes people have entered names, hoping that FamilySearch algorithms will find those sources for them. I do this myself with a father by just adding the father by last name to a person, hoping more info will come up. That's a pretty safe thing to do for me as my family is mostly in the UK and Germany and children were named after their father's last name! This "trick" has worked for me most of the time, especially as more and more records get indexed by volunteers.
The other way these unsourced entries get added is when people submit a gedcom from some other program, and the sources do not come across.
Because FamilySearch is open code, and anyone can edit, correct, change the records...if you feel like the information is incorrect, you could remove the relationships and put the correct info in its place.
If you don't know the parents, you can then leave it blank. Here is a link from the Help for removing a relationship:
I've also noticed that by removing incorrect parents, the correct ones can then be connected through FamilySearch hints (blue boxes). I've had this happen many times. The more correct we make THE tree, the better the hints get. I've noticed that if I'm not getting any hints on a branch of the tree...something's usually wrong!
I can't tell from this thread when this question was asked (communities are just being redone), so forgive my answer! I did do a search and found Stiles (KHRN-34Y) and his parents, and LOTS of sources for him...so someone has worked on this, and corrected, added, and changed what needed to be changed. Parents are still a question.
Perhaps this entry will help others...if I'm late to the party (which I think I am!),

Hi Carol
You say, "Ichabod and Roxie are his parents." I, too, have looked at this record and find no evidence for this at all. The "siblings" attributed to Stiles are all shown as born in New York (where the marriage of these "parents" took place), but Stiles is shown with an Ohio birth. I think it unlikely he belongs to this branch. Indeed, there are no sources to back up this theory. Perhaps I am missing something here, but I still believe it will be very difficult for Carolyn to find the true parents of Stiles - especially if Ohio records are unavailable for this period.

Family Search shows the parents of Stiles and Ichabod and Roxie. Since no source material is provided to back this up, I wish the person who added those names to the family tree would remove them or show proof.

Here's what I see. Lots of blue hints that are sources. As they get added, more info should come forward re. the parents.
