Wisconsin—Death Records, 1907–1932 - Need to clarify Instructions on Local Registrar Number

Field 1: State File Number: "Type the file number. It was usually a 4-digit number indicated in the upper right corner of the document and was sometimes referred to as a local registrar number, record number, or registered number."

Wisconsin Marriage Records, the instructions were clear: Do not mistake the "Registered Number" with the State File Number. Registered Number is NOT the State File Number.

Some batches I have reviewed, all the Registered Number on the record is "1". And per the instructions, it is indexed as "1". The field on the form does not represent a State File Number.

The instructions for Wisconsin Marriage and Death should be consistent as the records belong to the Wisconsin State Archives, Wisconsin Historical Society.

Should this Registered No field with a "1" be marked <blank> or indexed as "1"?

    Daniel,

    I did not see that you took Anitra up on her suggestion that you post in Indexing Chat, so I will attempt to answer your question.

    I know that it seams counter to logic but the Project Instructions and the Field Help bot indicate that what is written in the Registered Number field in the image should be recorded in the State File Number field fotr the entry. The instructions do not provide any alternatives for what to do if every image in the batch has the same number, so you should just record what you see.

    You put this in Q and A Indexing. Great. You can also put it in Indexing Chat;

    @J C Bingham Thanks for answering that question. That is what I have been doing even though it is counter intuitive to me. I just looked at the PI's and the screen shot above looks like the first example and they have it marked <blank>. I think I have been doing some of them incorrectly. 🤔
