Hi Peter. When you ask a question, if you mention the name of the project, then you will draw the attention of people familiar with it. It’s important you share the batch information so that a responder can see what you are seeing and give you the most informed answer. Click on the 3rd horizontal icon from the right to see a couple of ways to do that. A quick way to do both the name of the project, and share your batch info is to copy and paste the COMPLETE name of your batch, from beginning to end, including the square brackets [. ] at the end, and the letters and numbers between them. Those letters and numbers are the “Batch Code,” and allow a helper to open and look at your batch - to “share” it.

But from your question, I’m guessing that you are working on US—City and Business Directories, 1749–1990 [Part B]. If I’m correct in my assumption, then here is some guidance on what you seem to be asking about, from the “What to Remember About This Project” section of your Project Instructions: Note especially the italicized passages.

    • Index each unique name. Some names may be duplicated. When names are exact duplicates, index only the first instance of the name listed. Skip the other exact duplicates and then index the next unique name. Unique names include names with different middle initials, spouses listed with the individual, and different name spellings.
    • Index names of employers and and employees. When indexing business names, index the names of individuals only. For example, "The Ad Book" would not be indexed, but "Barner Kehlenbeck Wines and Liquors" should be indexed. In this case, you would create 2 entries. One for Barner (surname) and another for Kehlenbeck (surname). Do not index occupations or terms such as, "banker," "policeman," "M.D.," or similar

From further in the same section

    • If advertisements were included on directories, index any names that may be in the advertisements. Mark full page advertisements in Step 1: Images as No, No Extractable Data.

So, yes we do index names that occur in advertisements. And yes, if only Surnames are given, then we index those in the Surname Field and Ctrl+B (<Blank>) the Given Names Field. And if names are repeated exactly (I.e. the Entries would be identical), then we only Index the first instance. We want only unique names. These latter two instructions apply whether the names come from ads or from the body of the directory with the normal listings.
