This is my first time indexing a record that could contain slaves, so I hope I am asking my question in an appropriate and non offensive way. This record doesn't specifically list (that I can see) whether the child is a slave or not. Should I record the father in the father field? or the slave holder field? Thank you.

Thank you for working on these records! You are correct, in that this particular form doesn't seem to indicate whether or not the father is a slave, so I believe the instructions say to put the father's name in the Father's Name field. Thanks again for your help!

When you get a record that has the columns free or slave, the instructions will make better sense. You can see the examples in the project instructions for the different forms and how to index them. Your image is most like the 2nd Example. Project Instructions can be opened anytime by clicking on the last icon in the horizontal toolbar.
