I type it so often and wonder what name it is abbreviated for. I've looked places for answers but have not received a given name for it. Do you know?
Possibly Henry. Think Baby Names also says Hy is a name and means Life, or an abbreviation for Hiram, Chaim, Hyman, Hyacinth.
What records are you doing that you type it often? That could be a clue to the origin.

Hi Laura. Probably Harry or Henry depending on where it is alphabetically. But just index it as H’y or Hy. The punctuation doesn’t matter to the FS Search engine.. And it is for the Researchers to decide what the H’y stands for.
Given where it usually falls alphabetically in the records I have been indexing I have assumed that it stands for Henry. It has shown up in many of the directories I have been indexing.
