UK locations
I am indexing UK, England, Middlesex—Parish Registers, 1539–1988 [Part A][MSXQ-SZQ] - new to it - and feel unsure as to what I would put for the location, as most are street addresses (I think in London, but no idea which suburb). I'm accustomed to narrowing down locations to town or cities.

If the name of the parish is not on the image, then you would mark the parish field blank. We don't use outside sources to fill in information when indexing. We only use an outside source to verify information that is on the image. For instance, if you couldn't quite make out the handwriting on the image for Marylebone you could verify the spelling with a google search. Sometimes the project instructions might tell us to look at the previous images to gain information, like this one says you can look at previous images to better understand the column heading, or sometimes to get a date.

Okay I've Googled an address and it is London, St Marylebone, which I do know to be a parish I've indexed before, so I will go with that.

I'm a reasonably experienced reviewer, and I do know to check back and forward in a batch although this is often a dead end in my opinion. I use outside sources to verify my choices when necessary. This has become especially important with standardised place names putting the kibosh on hundreds of South African records, for example.
I'm trying my hand at indexing UK records for a change.

I just want to clarify for indexers and reviewers that we do not enter any place or location on the entry form that is not found on the image.
This is the Official Policy of FamilySearch for Locality Fields
When indexing a locality, we ask that indexers only index what appears on the image.
According to the field help instructions, abbreviations may be expanded, and misspellings corrected, but we ask that indexers do not add additional locality values that do not appear on the image.
However, we care about what you care about and want to do what we can to make things better for you who are doing such great work for FamilySearch. The best way that you can help us correct issues that you might come upon with a locality that is missing or might need some correction is to do the following:
- Go to this link: https://www.familysearch.org/research/places/
- Search in the search bar the place in question. If you do not find it,
- Click on the + sign in the upper left where it says “Suggest a New Place”
- Our team of engineers who are working on this project will then be able to make the necessary corrections.
Because of your feedback we have already made some changes to update some of the localities. We appreciate your dedication and efforts in caring for these valuable records.
