New Discussion vs. Ask a Question

Is there a difference between the functions New Discussion vs. Ask a Question within a group? If so, the vast majority of posts in the research groups, at least, are questions, so it would be helpful if it were automatically set to Ask a Question rather than to New Discussion.

@Charlotte Noelle Champenois this was done on purpose. When you go to Q and A you can see the default there is Ask a Question. In groups we have defaulted to discussion. The thought being that groups are more conducive to discussions while Q and A is where most questions will be asked.

My understanding is that Q and A is for more general questions. Most of the posts we see in the research groups are questions as well, just questions specific to research or translation in a specific geo area.

Either way, is there an actual difference between the two options? The form looks the same, so I'm wondering whether/where any differences impact anything.
