Can you please add the ability to reorder photos into chronological order?

After spending years gathering and adding photos to my ancestors, Memories looks like a jumbled mess. Baby photos next to old-age photos. Would love to have an option to be able to group or sort uploaded photos into chronological order. Thank you

YES PLEASE!!!! I am trying to add photos left to me by my parents and it is a very time consuming project. It would be soooo helpful to be able to move and organize the pictures by events/time frames/ etc.

Amen! It is nice they can be reordered in the Gallery, but it would be a great asset if pictures could be reordered in the memories on a Person Page

one way to do this - is to add the YEAR to the very beginning of the title

and then you can sort by title.

also be sure to use ALBUMS (folders) so that you can keep different photo groups disjoint.

Hi Dennis. I have a year at the beginning of the title of all the photos on the photo section of a persons page but I cannot get them to sort by title or anything. How do I get them to appear sorted by title, I.e. by the year at the beginning of each title? I can do this in the Gallery where all the photos I have uploaded appear. I cannot see how to do it on an individual person’s page in the tree.

on individual people - No you cannot, there is no sort order

BUT you can create an ALBUM for each person - if you wanted to - and within the album view you could sort by title.

Thank you for explaining. Having the ability to sort photos on an individuals page by title, the tags, date and location fields we are able to complete for each photo would be great. It seems a huge oversight for FamilySearch not to have included this ability on an individual persons page when all the fields are recorded against each photo. We can sort other facts and sources in date order on other parts of the persons page.

I guess it just depends on what each user is looking for . . . Im sure there are many users who have totally glossed over what you have discovered.

Every user of familysearch has their own focus and area of use.

BUT yes - this is a feature that others have notcied the lack of and reported to FS.

How do you create a album? I wish they would create folders and the ability to drop the pictures into the folders. SkHall

    Thats the idea behind ALBUMS

Realize that Folders are not at the person level - Folders are created at the GALLERY level

but you could indeed create an album for a specific person - of all their related items

I think having the ability to organize all kinds of Memories for a person in folders. I think a folder should be able to include different types of media: photos, stories, documents, and audio. Folders could be used to organize different times in a person's life or areas of service. With no way to organize different media types in Memories it is like throwing papers in file drawer and hoping to find the information later on. When documents are organized in folders in a file cabinet drawer it becomes easy to find and use the information in the drawer.

You can arrange photo and document memories within an album and create a slide show.

If a contributor has added an audio story directly to a photo, you can also choose whether or not to play the audio

Hello all. I am in deep gratitude for all that the techs at FS do for us, truly I am. A major frustrations remains and others have commented as well. Why can we sort in chron order in albums but not in an individual person's file/profile? I have SO many photos from 100 years ago and I know the chron order ... would love to put them in my deceased family's files. Is FS considering making this an option in the near future? should we settle for creating albums for each family member and not expect this to ever happen? If this is the case, would you kindly explain the reasoning behind it? Just curious as the reasoning to any issue always settles the mind. Again, most appreciative for all you folks do for us!

    All

    FYI

    I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron ...

    Just in passing ...

    Great suggested enhancement ...

    But ...

    That Said ...

    You are not alone ...

We would ALL just LOVE the "Memories" (especially, the Photographs), to be in chronological order ...

This, suggested enhancement, is certainly not "New" ...

Just in case, any of you have not been using, the "Family Tree" Part, of 'FamilySearch', for too long ...

Please, be aware; and, advised ...

That is what, MANY; Many, many, of us, have been asking/requesting (in fact, "Begging"), for MANY Years.

    Unfortunately ...

To-Date, such has not eventuated ...

    Again ...

    Great suggested enhancement ...

We can but live in hope.

    Just my thoughts.

I know, that this certainly does not help/assist; but, I hope, that this may provide you with, some additional, insight; and, perspective.

    Brett

    . . . also please be aware

as various people have pointed out the ability to order photos on the memories tab of a Famiiy Tree profile is just not available even after numerous people have pointed out the need.

BUT dont forget you DO have total control of the order of photos in a multipage pdf document you can create and then upload as a single file to Memories and thus anyone viewing that set of images in the pdf will see them exactly as you intend.

ILOVEPDF is an online system that can allow you to compile PDF's from multiple JPG files

as well as COMPRESS it to a file size under the 15MB size limit.

    (it is totally free)

    see: https://www.ilovepdf.com/

another thing that many people don't take into consideration when asking for this option is that different users may have different expectations as to how the items are ordered. It would not be acceptable that one user could control how all the users of FS see the order of photos for a given person. Though I totally agree some option to sort the items dynamically that each user could choose independently as they wish, REALLY would be nice and not sure why the option is not there yet after so many requests.

Yes, as many have commented, we have worked hard to save many family photos in FamilySearch but it is frustrating to see the photo memories of our ancestors arranged in random order. Then even more frustrating to find that we cannot at least arrange them in chronological order and maybe even select the very best for a slide show to show our grandchildren. Please!

Keep in mind that numerous people can all submit memories items for a given one particular person in family tree

and each submitter may have totally different ideas on inclusion, order and priority and what is best .

That is one reason I highly suggest multipage PDF files where YOU can control the inclusion of multiple items in a single file and keep it all in the exact order and content you want.

    example: https://www.familysearch.org/photos/artifacts/136542783?cid=mem_copy

(be sure and scroll down through multiple pages on that ONE document)

    ALSO

you CAN create a an ALBUM where by you include just the photos you want, in the order you want, the best of what you want - and share it with just who you want - and YOU retain total control of the album and can create your own .

    example of an album

    https://www.familysearch.org/photos/gallery/album/968264

and same album with slideshow and audio

    https://www.familysearch.org/photos/gallery/album/968264?playSlideshow

Hey Dennis, I do love your PDF family stories as a way to organize things. Thanks. But I do believe being able to have some sort of organized way to present an individuals memories would be better than the present random presentation in FamilySearch. We are capturing lots of the old memories and were hoping FamilySearch would be a great way to share them with cousins, kids and grandkids .... but with the problems of presentation and also problems associated with when contributors pass away maybe it it best to do our own albums and stories and just share the finished product rather than using FamilySearch for the organization.

by "Album" I meant a FamilySearch Album - like this link:

an "album" in FS is a way to organize FamilySearch Memories into a specific set in a specific order.

    https://www.familysearch.org/photos/gallery/album/968264

and same album with slideshow and audio

    https://www.familysearch.org/photos/gallery/album/968264?playSlideshow

(all under my control and my order - and with audio) - and all I have to do is share the url of the album with family members.

    BUT . . .

It would be nice to have a way of sorting the items under a person profile in family tree - In theory I agree

but it would need to be done dynamically (on the fly) and the sort order not stored

what would the system do when 20 people have submitted items for a given person

each person doing so differently, some with titles some without, some with dates - some with not

and each person thinking the sort order should be different.

even if you could sort by X - you wouldnt be able to go in an change any titles, years, descriptions for items uploaded by other people - so even if there was a sort opion on X - it doesnt really mean you would be able to update each item to put it in the order you wanted - if someone else uploaded the item.

This is a very oft submitted request - - but the solution is more complex than most really think about.

I very much value - FamilySearch's tools for PRESERVING family search memories - even with its quirks and limitation.

My feeling is FamilySearch will still be around when other systems have come and gone. . .

I believe in a hybrid approach - -yes sometimes doing things outside of FamilySearch where you have more flexibility and control. (maybe a powerpoint, a video or other ) But then ensuring that in some form or another I upload the items to FS to ensure they are preserved for years to come.

(often better done in a pdf file - or a FS Memories Album when we are talking about a "set" of items)

Im not so concerned about the order (especially when realizing there could be a multitude of people who have submitted items on a given record) - I'm much more concerned the items are preserved for decades to come (and for FREE)

one thing that I wish could be done is the Linking of a FS ALBUM to a specific PERSON in the FamilyTree

(where as currently you can only link individual Memories items - but not albums)

allowing the Linking of the album - allows a person to present a specific subset GROUP of items (in a controlled order) and even allows adding audio.

Yes I agree linking an Album to a specific person would be great. I would suggest allowing the SlideShow option to be used and I would slightly modify the Slide show option to 1) use the small check circle at the upper right to select those photos to select a subset for the Slide Show and 2) put a subtitle on the picture of the Date, Description and Contributor.

Possibly on the Memories for a Person they could be organized by the date, if entered. If not go to the end of the list in random order as now. Then allow the SlideShow as described above.

I prefer your Album solution with the above suggestions.

I do see the complexities of trying to have universal contributors and trying to figure out a way to present the data in an interesting/compelling but "fair" way.

    as to my "hybrid approach"

One idea is that many families will find something like PowerPoint - or some more modern but similar presentation tools - much better suited to a personalized customized shareable presentation for family and friends.

one can without too much effort - then take that presentation and save it in pdf format. (just about anything you can print - can be saved in pdf format) - even if the option is not hard coded into the application.

I believe there are also easy ways to take a Powerpoint and convert it to video or to page by page JPG files.

the video could be uploaded to Youtube - and / or Facebook (if desired)

jpg images (which would have the Powerpoint labels and text) could be easily uploaded to a FS album.

I realize that the above is a bit "techie" - but hey - if you are going through the process of making a very nice family presentation - you are already going though much more technical effort than this - and these are just a few additional steps at the end.

there are, Im sure, numerous other ideas and tools
