Indexing Ult Or Inst in "UK, England, Middlesex—Parish Registers, 1539–1988"
Hi,
I've been doing a bit of indexing in this batch and noticed recently that there are quite a few records for baptisms and births that use the abbreviations "Ult" and "Inst" to indicate the birth of a child in either the previous month(Ult) or the same month(Inst) as the baptism. I was really confused at first, I mean, what. Suddenly there's two new months I've never heard of? I looked it up first on google, and then on here and found out about what they actually stand for. I thought I might try to let others know about this. If any FamilySearch Admin see this Idea, I might suggest adding this little nugget of information in the project instructions somewhere so others don't have to face the same confusion I did. Thanks!

I clearly remember receiving "official" letters (some years back) where this terminology was always used. You have illustrated that the use of ult(imo) and inst(ant) is now considered very old-fashioned and has possibly become obsolete!
(As an example, a reply to a letter from a government department would read, say, "Thank you for your correspondence of the 30th ult." or "...... of the 3rd inst." I assume you are too young to have encountered this style of reference to dates!)
