Read the Instructions for the batch you get! They can be different on each batch, and when they are, it is for a reason. Because the instructions can be lengthy, people tend to skip them.

Unless the batch instructions specify to do it differently, index EXACTLY as you see things on the sources, regardless of whether you think it is right or not. The whole purpose of indexes is simply to have a digital "representation" of the image source so that it can be searched by computer. Indexes are NOT the place to put conclusions, even if you DO know that the person writing the initial source recorded things wrong. The place to record those conclusions is in the genealogical record and NOT the indexes for historic documents. If your conclusions are wrong for any reason, you will be hiding the truth from all search engines.

also realize there are various genealogical service project opportunities out there.

Here is just one other example:

you can also look in JUSTSERVE.COM

Indexing is great - but it may not be "for everyone"

Learn the General Indexing Guidelines. Read the Project Instructions, Examples, and the Field Helps for every collection before starting to index them. Show them the Keyboard shortcuts and have them experiment with the indexing tools (icons) and the different modes (column, table, row) that are available. Don't forget to tell them about the Help Center, and of course, Indexing Chat.
