The use of two names joined by - or- in German records.

I am working on my Germany Family History. I have come across several names like this Joseph Giese Or Connert MDW8-J78. The fathers name was originally the same but I changed it to Giese, because it seemed to me more commonly used. I put the Connert in the Other information sections. I know that sometimes it was the wife's maiden name, but not always. What do I put for the last name. Should I have "Giese" or should it be "Giese or Connert" All of his children have Giese, his grandfather has Giese and brothers and sisters are mixed.

Perhaps the FamilySearch article What is a German Farm Name? is relevant

    https://www.familysearch.org/blog/en/what-is-a-german-farm-name/

"Sometimes you will find the names in the records identified by the terms “alias”, “vel”, “modo”, “gen.” or “dit”. These refer to the second name that a person may have acquired"

There is also the FS article  How should I enter names in Family Tree?

    https://www.familysearch.org/help/helpcenter/article/how-to-enter-names-in-family-tree

which has a section :"Put nicknames and other variations in the Other Information section" which includes the wording

    • "Name variants caused by naming customs, such as French "dit" names.

    "

Don't put Or's in the name boxes. Pick whichever name you feel is best and then you are right, the alternate name goes in the other information section. This way if I search for Joseph Giese, MDW8-J78 will come up. If I search for Joseph Connert, MDW8-J78 will come up. But the way it is now with the Or, MDW8-J78 still comes up either name I search for.

Welcome to the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum ...

    .

Due to the nature of your 'Question' ...

    .

I am "Moving" this 'Question' of yours, in the 'Group' being "How to Use FamilySearch Community", in this "Community.FamilySearch" Forum, to the 'Group' being "General Questions", in the Forum; so that, the members of that group can answer/assist you.

    .

That Group is "Public", which you can join, if you wish.

    .

As, that 'Group' being "How to Use FamilySearch Community" relates to HOW to USE the "FamilySearch.Community" Forum", rather than for research help/assistance.

    .

    Also ...

    .

It is good to 'see' that you posted the same 'Question' in the 'Group' being "Germany Genealogy Research" in the Forum.

    .

    As an aside ...

    .

I am ALSO "Tagging" this 'Question' of yours in to another specific 'Group' being "FamilySearch – Deutschsprachig" [ German speaking ] in the Forum, in the hope that, the members of that group may be able to answer/assist you.

    .

That Group, is ALSO "Public", which you can join, if you wish.

    .

    Very good questions ...

    .

    I just too a look at ...

    Joseph GIESE or CONNERT ... [ MDW8-J78 ]

    .

That is an OLD record from "New.FamilySearch", the forerunner to "Family Tree".

    .

I also took a look in his "ChangeLog" ...

    .

    2012: as Normal

2015: a "Source" added by 'FamilySearch'

2018 to present: the start of when Users/Patrons start working on the person

    And, many "Merges"/"Combines" ...

    ▬ Joseph GIESE or CONNERT ... [ LJGB-4X6 ]

    ▬ Joseph GIESE or CONNERT ... [ KCPD-P92 ]

    ▬ Joseph GIESE ... [ K8J4-4FB ]

    ▬ Joseph GIESE ... [ MXJS-ZL9 ]

    ▬ Joseph GIESE ... [ M2D7-JNT ]

    ▬ Joseph GIESE ... [ MP3Z-YV6 ]

the latter two (x2) which you yourself effected.

    .

Either, GIESE; or, CONNERT ... that is the 'Question' ...

WHAT 'Family Name' / 'Surname' is the, more likely; or, correct, one.

    .

I have just put ALL x30 "Sources" in 'Date' Order (and, as Attached).

    [ That may help a little ... ]

    .

It is really a matter of getting access to 'see' the "Images" of his "Christening" Records, to determine his 'Family Name' / 'Surname' ...

    .

WHY is that "Or" there, interesting?

    .

I know that this does not help; but, I hope the "Sources" in 'Date' order may help.

    .
