This record for my great aunt Mary Shiflett shows "Colorado", and "Oklahoma" - this person was definitely born in Oklahoma, lived in Colorado at some point but death record is listed in Oklahoma vital records... why is Colorado listed? Is that to signify the state where the presons social security card was issued? I can't find an obituary or burial place for her.

    Hello,

I looked at some of my ancestors who would be on the Index. It appears that many of the US SSIndex are like yours. Some put the birth place in. some didn't.

I don't know reasoning. Maybe States are different.

    Is this your Mary LB2M-3XX?

I think it is your Mary. She was living in Colorado and signed as contact for her brother as of October 16, 1940. Your source.

    Interesting.

Your source says the issue place is Colorado. I wonder if it because she was linked to her brother in the Colorado WWII Draft Registrations. Maybe her SSI was issued there as you said. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSML-RZQP?cc=2515885

I'm not sure this is helpful.

    Thank you,

    Anitra

The STATE field in SSDI records - is the state the SS was originally applied for (not the state they were born in)

also note SSDI existed over many decades - and the required information for application may have changed - but I have always understood the "STATE" field in SSDI records represents the state the SS was applied for - and in early decades - many people didnt get SS numbers until they were older (decades older)
