How to cite a location when its name has changed from the original name
I have a location in my family for events which took place in Herbolzheim, Mosbach, Baden, Germany in the 1800s. Administrative districts have change and now Herbolzheim is Heilbronn district, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. I would like to keep the Mosbach location for my tree, for those events, because that is how the original resources are described in the Family History catalog. Someone has been online on Family Search and has changed the locations to Neudenau, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. After some research online, I have discovered that Herbolzheim is closeby Neudenau and is southwest of Neudenau.

FYI
.
IF, by "Cite", you mean, "Record"/"Enter", the ORIGINAL "Location", for the particular 'Time' Period, for an individual/person; THEN, you should simply, just DO that, "Record"/"Enter", the ORIGINAL "Location", for the particular 'Time' Period, for the individual/person; as, it was then, at that 'Time', NOT as it is NOW.
.
In many instances, the various "Changes" to a "Location", according to the various 'Time' periods, are recorded in the "Research/Places" Database for 'Place' Names, in 'FamilySearch'.
.
Check out, the 'Place' Names database in 'FamilySearch'.

.
Many 'Places' recorded in the 'Place' Names database in 'FamilySearch' already DO have 'Dates' associated with them; whereas, some DO NOT.
.
The 'Place' Names database in 'FamilySearch' is a continual 'Work in Progress', ever changing, ever evolving; as, more information 'comes to hand'.

How do I use the Place Research Tool in my family history research?
.
IF, a particular "Change" to a "Location", according to a particular 'Time' period, is NOT recorded in the "Research/Places" Database for 'Place' Names; THEN, you CAN "Request" the "Addition" of a NEW "Standard" (for that 'Time' period) for that "Location", in the the "Research/Places" Database for 'Place' Names, in 'FamilySearch'.

"Record"/"Enter", the ORIGINAL "Location", for the particular 'Time' Period, for an individual/person, in 'Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch', NOT as it is NOW.
.
I hope this helps.

Many thanks, Brett, for your quick and complete response! I did find the proper place in the list of standardized place names, with the notation "before 1945." Just what I needed. Thank you also for the several links for finding help.
Outstanding, terrific job! 😃
