When a person dies what happens to their record and memories attached to it?

nothing happens immediately.
if they are LDS - and their ward clerk marks their membership record as deceased.
It is expected that their record in FS FT would eventually be marked as deceased.
For NON LDS - chances are their record may never be marked as deceased - because FS doesnt know (and it may be better that they dont know depending on various factors)

My father passed away in September I believe he has been marked deceased as my sister merged a record today and it states deceased. I had added memories to my dads page a couple of years ago thinking it would stay with his page and that when he dies it would all be there. There are no memories attached to the record for him now. I have not merged my living record in my tree to the one that is deceased. I want to get those memories viewable for all his family to see. I also uploaded a audio clip of him, yes I can re-upload but would rather not have to do it all again.
I should know how to do all of this but I do not.

this gets into a grey area that many people dont clearly understand.
For one - just because someone created a record for your father that your sister then found - does NOT by itself mean that yours fathers own record on his own account was marked deceased.
Can you confirm that your father was or was not LDS? (only for the reason of answering your question)
You say that you added "memories to your Dad's page" . . .
That statment needs to be further clarified . . . do you mean you logged in under HIS account and uploaded memories items? Or you did something under YOUR own account. Those would have been two different records for yoru Father (when he was living). (one under his account and one under your account if that was the case)

Yes he is LDS.
Yes I logged into his personal page with him a couple of years ago to uploaded several pictures and an audio file.
When my sister logged into her family search she had her own number for him that he was marked living in her tree, it then said it may be a duplicate and asked if she wanted to merge. She started the merge and then got unsure so did not complete it. Today we walked through the steps to complete it. We were finding three record numbers for him. I found his number in my tree which was still living. There was a record marked deceased and another record that we believe was the one she started to merge on her family tree. Two of the records had a death date the one marked deceased it also had sources attached to it. This is the record that we merged together as it had more information attached to it - ie sources. I still am showing my living record for him in my tree.
I was hoping that the record we merged together would be to his personal record that we uploaded pictures to but it was not. So I am trying to find out how to find those. I believe I have his log in if I can find it but that is a big if right now as my house is under remodeling currently and most of my belongings are packed.
I'm not sure where to go to find the things we attached to my fathers account a couple of years ago.

so at least two scenarios exist
1) there is a chance your father's own record has NOT been marked as deceased - and someone else who noted he died - created a record for him and that is the record your sister merged.
if that was case - this action does NOT by itself release the record your Dad had under his account into the public view. You should contact the ward clerk in the ward of your father and ensure that yoru father's MEMBERSHIP record was indeed marked as deceased. This is the only thing that would eventually release yoru Dad's record into FS FT.
2) Whether or not case #1 is true or not - there is still a chance that the records you uploaded under your Father's account were marked as "private". This is one of the reasons I, for one, dont mark anything private - because if I die - there is no simple way make them public if tehy have been marked as private.
HOWEVER - I reallly dont think this is the case as the "private option" only came out in late 2020 and if your uploads of memories items were made prior to that - chances are they were never marked as private.
Can you tell me the name of yoru father and his birth and death dates? (private message me if you feel more comfortabel doing that)

as an aside - - a merge would never delete any of the FS Memories hooked to its premerged records.
so the fact that the current public record for your father doesnt have the memories items uploaded - means that the record that existed under your Father's account - is not part of the merged public record you are now seeing.

Just as an aside, all Deceased LDS members records are mark deceased,normally within two weeks. However a good Ward/Branch Clerk (and I have nine as a Stake Clerk) will print off the membership record before that, in case information is required at a future date.

Dennis, I would be interested to know the answer to why she could not see those memories. Does marking things private in your personal account keep them private when someone passes away? I know family members such as a spouse has been disappointed to lose access to the deceased spouse account because they did so much work and it feels locked and lost. If you would share what you learn I would appreciate that knowledge.
