My first relative is Mary Ann Messenger, LY87-J2P, born 1 March 1805 North Carolina, USA. Death is 14 May 1861, Surry, North Carolina, USA. Her first husband was William Carter, L71Q-25N, born 1795-1799 in Winston-Salem, Forsyth, North Carolina, USA, and Death, between 1837-1839, Stokes, North Carolina, USA. I am unable to make any headway with finding the right Messenger family for Mary, She has a few other Messenger families living in the same area in the same time period. And her second marriage to Joab Barnes is well documented, but I can't find any details about her first marriage to William Carter yet.

My name is Marlene

The wiki is always a good place to start. It says the Register of Deeds has marriage and land records. Following the link there, the marriage records start in 1868. "Prior to marriage licenses, the county issued marriage bonds. Marriage bonds are no longer available in our office."

Next, Clerk Superior Court has probate records. A lot of the wills and probates are available at Ancestry.com https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/North_Carolina_Probate_Records
