I am the descendent of families that are categorized as Germans from Russia, and try as a might, that section of my tree is bright with red boxes indicating non-standard place names. The place names on the records rarely match the options available, or the only option available is USSR, which did not yet exist, or current day Ukraine. Any suggestions? Thanks

    Hello Janet,

Place names are difficult when we are talking about Europe. There is something you can do.

I found these directions in the little ? mark on the upper right when signed into FamilySearch.

    https://www.familysearch.org/help/helpcenter/article/how-do-i-add-or-correct-a-standardized-place-in-family-tree

I don't force the place name because the algorithms won't hunt for it.

What I may do until I can get it changed is, make the place name smaller.

Like: San Diego, San Diego, California.

If it doesn't have both San Diego's I will delete one. And go with San Diego, California.

Then go through the method of adding a place name in that link I gave. Then when added to FS the algorithms will hunt for the added place.

I helped a man from the Ukraine use that process as the boundaries changed and countries changed. He wanted it correct.

    I hope this helps.

    Anitra
