Messages in community
Why don’t we get notifications on screen when we have private messages from other users in the community?

While in the FS Communities, watch the little "bell" symbol in the top right corner of your screen (next to your personal icon). It will get a red dot placed on it when you receive a new message.
Note that when you get a message in the FamilySearch FamilyTree though, they put the red dot on a totally DIFFERENT icon. Instead of the little "bell" icon (which means something different in the FSFT), the red dot is put on the little "text cloud" icon (located next to the little "bell" icon) instead.
Consistency is such a wonderful thing for avoiding confusion!

Nice feature but I'm more annoyed with long wait for message to show up. Seems to last as long as a minute or even more.

As 'Jeff' indicates ...
.
We ARE already "Notified" when someone SENDS us a "Private" Message in/through the 'Messaging' "System" of the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum ...
.
NOT only are we notified of posts in 'Groups' that we are a member (provided you are watching for all posts) ...
.
That "Bell" ALSO indicates/includes the fact that we, DO, have "Private" Messages in/through the 'Messaging' "System" of the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum ...
.
It is just that EVERY "Notification" is signified under that "Bell", as one type; as, the "Bell" DOES NOT differentiate between WHAT the "Notification" is (eg. Post; or, Message; or, Comment in the (New) "IDEAS" Forum - like this).
.
I hope this helps.

So ...
That said ...

When there is a "Red" Circle with a "Number" ...
There is; or, you have, a new ... Post; or, Message; or, Comment in the (New) "IDEAS" Forum.
