Need for way to recognize tones instead of letters
Your "Famous Relatives" option is flawed. I am related to the fifth son of a Chinese emperor, which is why my maiden name "Ng" translates in English to the number 5 in Cantonese. I suspect that Family Search deals with those relatives whose names are best rendered into languages like English that use an alphabet instead of individual characters for words, such as Chinese or Japanese. Because translations of such languages into English are largely phonetic, the variance between translation of sounds renders chosen English spellings inconsistent. The practical effect is an inability to use Family Search in English effectively due to the differences in word pronunciation in different dialects of Chinese. Therefore, Family Search misses significant relationships when dealing with non-English-spoken names such as mine. While there are few Oriental members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today, this may change in the future. I hope that Family Search can make the changes needed. Thank you for allowing me to comment.Your "Famous Relatives" option is flawed. Hi, my name is Eric Leach (李耀明) and I am a Chinese Product Manager at FamilySearch. I'm not over the "Famous Relatives" experience, but I do know that Famous Relatives doesn't look at the names (whether 伍, Ng, Eng, or Wu). It just looks at your family tree.
- Does your family tree link back to 伍子胥 or 伍參? If not, Famous Relatives can't trace you back to them.
- Even if your tree DOES link back to them, this Famous Relatives experience wouldn't show that connection because I don't believe famous Chinese historical figures were included when that experience was designed. I will check on this.
THANK YOU for your feedback. Without your note, I probably would not have heard about this problem.
