Sort by Recent/Latest Comment
I see that the default order of topics in the Ideas Forum has changed to Recent which is a good thing! A great improvement on what was there before. Thank you.
I also see that there is a facility to sort by Latest comments. However, this is literally sorting by latest comments on an existing post. It does not include new topics.
What I want as a USER is for Recent to be for RECENT ACTIVITY, which is recent new topics, together with recent comments on existing topics.
The changes which have been made are much better than the previous situation, but I wonder how many want to be able to see ALL RECENT ACTIVITY without re-sorting.

That clicking on a topic title now opens it in a new tab is helpful, too. However, I agree with Maureen's comments here. Why was it so difficult to mirror the GetSat features from the beginning, rather than having to reintroduce them one-by-one?
Reminds me of the Watch List / Following situation in Family Tree. How easier things would have been for the programmers if they had followed the requests of users right from the beginning. Change implemented - job done.

To clarify, I believe most of us would like to see the time and date of the "latest comment" displayed, although it is certainly a great improvement that we can now push these to the top of the list. Previously, I would be immediately aware there had been a response following my comments - now I have to make a note of the date & time of my comment, as the display date / time remains that of the original post.
Not that the GetSat system did not create problems. I would often see a topic with the current date displayed (i.e. for latest comment), only to discover on opening that it was first posted about 5 years ago! So, with GetSat the problem was not being able to immediately identify you were dealing with an old topic. We can't have things both ways, I guess.

I must admit I still can't decide what order is better for comments to be listed within a topic. I suppose it is logical to add the most recent to the top, but we had become accustomed to GetSat's presentation, whereby the latest comment was added at the bottom.

My feeling is that comments within a single thread need to be displayed with the oldest at the top. That is because some of us write long comments (who, me?) and we read a single comment down from the top to the bottom. It is then a pain to scroll back up to see the chronologically next comment. If the oldest are at the top, then the chronologically next comment follows immediately after the last line of its predecessor - no scrolling necessary.

Actually - one other thing I've just noticed that, as yet I can't decide on... In GetSat we had two levels of response after the original post. Answers in time order, and then comments on the answers. The Communities go deeper with 3(?) levels and an arbitrary bottoming out that means you can't predict where your comment physically goes.
Here, there is only one level (unless I'm missing a command).
Maybe we simply haven't got into any complex threads yet, but so far I'm not missing multiple levels! It does mean you can always find the latest comment easily, unlike GetSat, where it might be a comment on a reply halfway back up the thread.

I concur wholeheartedly that while the new "recents" plus "latest comments" sorting options are an improvement, they're not all the way there yet. "Recents" needs to be "recent activity": new topics and new comments on old topics, in chronological order.
The single level of comments is a refreshing improvement, but it should be sorted oldest first, because English is written left to right and top to bottom, not bottom to top. (Don't even get me started on why bottom-quoting in email is so gadawfully wrong.)

Yes, if this was working correctly, everyone would have seen the original posting regarding this:

"Latest Comment" is incomplete it forces all recent postings that have not been commented on yet to the very bottom of the list. Since there are many hundreds of pages of topics to get to the bottom of the list, for all practical purposes they are GONE.
"Latest Comment" sorting is wrong. It should be "Latest Activity" the same as the FamilySearch Communities, GetSatisfaction.org/familysearch, and pretty well ALL other technical forums out there in Internet land have done it.
When a new topic post and a comment to another post both occur only seconds apart, it makes no sense at all to separate them in the topics list by putting one of them at the top and the other at the bottom of the list
