Please show Wales as a country of birth
When I look at country of birth, it shows, Ireland, Scotland, England or United Kingdom. Wales is a country on its own, I want to see see ancestors born in Wales, not lumped together with United Kingdom. Every other country within United Kingdom, is listed separately. Please show Wales, as a birth country

If you want to restrict the results returned in a search at familysearch.org, all you have to do is check the "Match exactly" box alongside your entry. See https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?q.surname=sweeney&q.surname.exact=on&q.birthLikePlace=wales&q.birthLikePlace.exact=on&count=20&offset=0&m.defaultFacets=on&m.queryRequireDefault=on&m.facetNestCollectionInCategory=on.
In this example, I have checked for an exact match on all births in Wales for the surname Sweeney. To narrow down the 1,931 results, enter a date span (say 1861-1881, or whatever period you are focussing on). If the name could be spelled, say, as SWEENY, too, then enter the last name as SWEEN*Y and this will include search results including both spellings. On the search page, there are also "filters" on the left of the page, whereby it is possible to narrow your searches by collection type (census, etc.).
To narrow searches in Family Tree (using FIND), carry out the same procedure. In this case, choose either "Wales" or "Wales, United Kingdom" from the drop-down list to get the desired results - see my example at https://www.familysearch.org/tree/find/name?search=1&birth=Wales||1&self=|sweeney|0|1.
Try experimenting on these pages, by adding less or more information (and sometimes NOT checking the "exact" boxes) until you find the best way to get more precisely to what you are searching for.

.
And, apart from your request, with which I wholeheartedly agree ...
.
The real Problem/Issue is the ("Indexed") "Sources" for, Birth; Death; and, Marriage, Registrations, in 'Familysearch'.
.
The MAJOR Problem/Issue in 'FamilySearch' is that MANY of the ("Indexed") "Sources" for, Birth; Death; and, Marriage, Registrations, that come across from "FindMyPast.co.uk" DO NOT indicate the 'Place' as "locality, county, Wales"; instead, they indicate the 'Place' as "locality, county, England".
.
To put it nicely, Very disappointing ...
.
And, this has been discussed in the past ...
.
Just saying ...

Paul, I think Angela is talking about the fan chart's "Birth Country" shading option.
The fan chart's shading is simplistic (or dumb): all it does is look at the end of the standardized placename entered in the "birth" vital. (I just tested that it definitely uses the standardized value, not the display value.) Therefore, what you need is standardized places that end in "Wales" rather than any form of "UK". I have no idea whether there are such things in the database. (My husband's cousin's mother is of Welsh ancestry, but I haven't done her family beyond her parents' arrival.)

Thank you for clarifying that, Julia! I have never used the fan chart, so did not identify the problem. However, having that "United Kingdom" suffix has proved problematic in searches, too. It would be most helpful if FamilySearch would discontinue its use - or rewrite its programs.

Wales is currently a constituent country of the United Kingdom. FamilySearch is inconsistent with having a constituent country as the top level in the place name or having the sovereign nation as the top level in the place name for different sovereign countries. The idea of having constituent countries or other large areas (like territories or states) shown for birth place on the fan chart has been introduced to FamilySearch. However, I do not know if they plan to program that in.
Wales, United Kingdom from 1801- today should technically be Wales, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and then Wales, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. And before 1801, Wales, Kingdom of Great Britain and before that, Wales, Kingdom of England. So FamilySearch is kinda in the middle of being technically correct, and not. There is a point, when being totally technically correct is pretty much pointless, though. But, not having Wales, United Kingdom, would mean not including a sovereign state by its colloquial name at all. So that is also a problem... FamilySearch just decided to draw the line where they did.
As for just having just Wales... Well FamilySearch just uses England until 1801, and they didnt want to write it Wales, England for until then, so they just have it simply as Wales.. From Wikipedia, which would mean more research is necessary, it says, "While many different leaders in Wales claimed the title of 'King of Wales', the country was only truly united once: under the rule of Gruffydd ap Llywelyn from 1055 to 1063" So it is just complicated, is what I can say lol.

Angela, can you help clarify where you are wanting this updated? Under Search then Records? In Family Tree on the fan chart like someone else mentioned? In an activity?
