Jeff Wiseman said: Thanks Joe. Understood. It's just that the wording is quite Schizophrenic to the intended meaning that I KNOW was behind it.
How about just "Debate or in depth discussion of topics such as politics or religion"
Usenet had 10's of thousands of discussion groups on it and they ALL had to make a statement of what the scope of the group is intended for that everyone could see and understand the rules. But I don't think we have anything for the feedback forum. The code tries to say it without really saying it.
But the scope of this group is not family history (that's the scope of the FamilySearch Community) The scope of this forum is specifically for providing feedback and discussions regarding the FS website and tools operations (at least that's what it says in some other areas of the web site). If the scope were spelled out in (say) the code, then that statement above could be further clarified to something like "Debate or in depth discussion of topics outside the scope of this forum (such as politics or religion)"
But again, there are two distinct problems with the statement in the code:
1. It implies that the scope of the feedback forum is Family History, which it is not (although it IS for the FamilySearch Community)
2. It implies that religion is not relevant to Family History, which it is.
Neither of these implications appear correct to me. I don't think that I'm being pedantic here, I just really object to formally documented "Rules" that mean something different than what they actually say.0 -
