James Riddell III said: I have a detailed record of my Riddell ancestry from the Scots Ancestry Research Society, beginning with Thomas Riddell/Margaret Scott and the first generation of James's, born 1 June, 1812. Would the hard copy of this report, commissioned ca. 1970, be of interest to FamilySearch? I would be glad to email a .DOCX file or mail a hard copy if so desired. Jim Riddell III (actually James V and there is also a James VI and VII) . email jr3@erinet.com

James Riddell III said: Not true at all, in the U.S, for legal purposes anyway. If my birth certificate said James V, then that would legally apply to me as well, no matter who was alive or what the real sequence. As a matter of fact, my birth certificate explicitly has my name as James III, so that's who I am. By your logic I should use James I, or Sr., since both my father and grandfather are not alive. Further, my father did not have Jr. or II on his birth certificate and never used same on any legal document, ever, except my birth certificate, i.e. he just as easily could have named me James V. In fact, not sure why he did not, since he did know his father, grandfather and great grandfather were James at my birth.0
