Whether to Index Passenger Lists That Do Not Show Port of Arrival and Other Heading Information

Jill Bateman said: In Web Indexing Batch M9RN-94V, US Louisiana, New Orleans--Quarterly abstracts of vessels, 1820-1875, there was no heading on my batch or any of the six preceding or following batches to indicate a header of where the passengers had arrived. If Project Instructions could indicate how indexers are to treat such images, that would be helpful. Do indexers index batches such as this or return them marked No Extractable Data? Also, on my batch there was no heading that indicated that the numbers following the passenger names were ages. I indexed them anyway but know that in previous projects they were not supposed to be indexed. Thank you for your help.

Paul said: Although not involved in indexing work I find it sad to read that instructions for the various projects continue to be unclear and inconsistent. Over the years, it has been rare to find anyone connected to the FamilySearch "Indexing section" visiting this forum. This is a shame, because it seems some very useful feedback is never getting back to anyone in a position of responsibility, who could help resolve your specific problem and/or the wider issues involved with project instructions.0

For any FS employee reading this, I must say all this information is buried away. Why not be upfront and indicate the link to the Community much earlier on, as the Facebook page is stated to be no longer active.0 -
Slotbuddy said: You are correct, Maureen. I do index and review on a regular basis and just view here to keep involved. The site you mention is the only spot available to help indexers and reviewers and they do a good job. However, it is hard for new indexers to find them. Most of the time reviewers just stumble across them by accident. It should be posted as part of the instruction page and not just a little tag alongside the indexing page where it is barely noticed.0
