FamilySearch Moderator said: Leroy, I understand what you are asking for and it has been a request from the earliest days of the Source Box. It would satisfy a long-term intent to be able to attach an existing Source to any Person. I desire that too but we have never been able to convince the teams to support this intent.
The Source box serves as a set of links to Sources you have created and put in the box, to reference later - to edit and detach and delete, but not much more.0 -
Leroy Roberts said: Tom, I understand what you are saying, I use it often.
I sometimes find a source that is attached to the wrong person and copy it to the source box after pressing "view" from the opened source. I then find the correct person that the source belongs to and attach it from the source box. Sometimes the correct person doesn't have any sources attached and I can't access the source box. The only way to get access is to create a source, open it up and then press "View" to gain access, then go to the source box and attach a copy to the correct person. When you go to the source box there is a right hand column which allows you attach sources. When you press "Source Box" from the option under your name, there is no right hand column.0 -
Jeff Wiseman said: It may have something to do with the fact that if you provided that ability while in the source box, to attach one of those source to a person, your ability to identify the appropriate person would need to allow you to pick them out of the 1.2+ Billion names that are in the database. Can't do that with a "pick-list"

Leroy Roberts said: So, what is the procedure to attach a source that is attached to a wrong person and you know the PID of the correct person that the source belongs to?0

Tom Huber said: I can only relate how I would do that.
First, if the source was originally attached using the source linker, I would use the source linker to detach the source, and then attach it to the correct person using that person's ID.
If the source had been independently entered, I would copy the source to my source box, then open the correct person's profile (in its own tab or window) and attach the source from that person's source page via my source box. Then, on the other profile, I would detach the source with reason.
If needed, I would then edit the title for the source.0 -
Tom Huber said: If you want details for the first, I can provide that, but it will involve using the beta site (so I don't mess up a valid record and its change log) and capturing a number of screens.0

Gordon Collett said: If I may be excused for exaggerating, I'm pretty sure this request was first made two days after the source box was first introduced. I think it would be great if the source box was modified so that it works the same whether one enters it from a person's sources page or under your user name.
Here is how this could affect my work flow.
1) I have created a source for a census record that is not on Family Search and saved it to my Source box on the father of a family and now want to attach it to his wife and two children. It has no data FamilySearch can extract or use to further identify each individual so there is no need for a unique source for each person. Currently I am sitting on the father's sources page.
2) Click Details.
3) Click on Wife's name.
4) Click Sources on her summary card to go to her sources page.
5) Click Add Source
6) Click Attach from Source Box
7) Click Attach twice, one to choose and once to confirm.
8) Click her name to return to her sources page.
9) Click on Details
10) Click on Child 1's name.
11) Click Sources on her summary card to go to her sources page.
12) Click Add Source
13) Click Add from Source Box
14) Click twice, one to choose and once to confirm.
15) Click her name to return to her sources page.
16) Click on Details
17) Click on Child 2's name.
18) Click Sources on his summary card to go to his sources page.
19) Click Add Source
20) Click Add from Source Box
21) Click twice, one to choose and once to confirm.
22) Click his name to return to his sources page.
23) Click on Details
Assuming I have been working on this entire family recently, if code could be pulled from the source linker and modified, the source box could look like this wherever I enter it from and allow me this work flow:
1) I have created a source for a census record that is not on Family Search and saved it to my Source box on the father of a family and now want to attach it to his wife and two children. It has no data FamilySearch can extract or use to further identify each individual so there is no need for a unique source for each person. Currently I am sitting on the father's sources page.
2) Click Add Source
3) Click Attach from Source Box.
4) Click Attach or the paper click to see:
5) Select each individual to be added (would be good to have a check box rather than "Select" beside each name). If I have been working on all the family they will be right there in the history list and it would take three quick clicks.
6) Click done.
7) Click the father's name to return to his sources page.
The more people the source is to be attached to, the more savings in clicks there would be.0 -
Juli said: As the moderator says, FS already has mechanisms for limiting and choosing your "target"; there's one version that applies when you invoke Source Linker from the index record, and another version that applies when you use the Attach to Family Tree button on an unindexed image. I haven't much explored the specifics, but they both seem to be based on your Recents list.0

Leroy Roberts said: Gordon,
In step 4 of the lower portion of your message, when I click on attach, I never get a History List. I get a box asking for a reason to attach.0 -
Gordon Collett said: Sorry for any confusion. I guess I wasn't clear. The first half of my message is the way things work now. The second half is my request and example of what would be nice to see with photoshopped mockups to illustrate what I mean. Nobody sees that second image. It's a model. It is what I wish we would see.0
