You'll be better off using uploading the entire photo to your memory gallery and then using the portrait tool to size and center the image of the person. The following picture is about 3-1/2 by 5-1/2 inches at 600 dpi.
I have previously taken care of the portrait for both the husband and wife (by grandparents). Here is what the portrait editor looks like:
If the photograph was not scanned at full size with a dpi of 600, the scanned size might have needed to be adjusted before I uploaded it. (I use irfanview, a free image editing tool).0 -
Tom Huber said: What I'm saying is that by cutting down the size, you've created a bit of a problem for the system. The image you are attempting to load has a dpi of 72 (which is why the image is fuzzy), and measures a little over 3/4 (.83) by about 1-1/2 (1.57) inches in size.
To properly display in the portrait, the system has to adjust the size. The display size of the portrait is within a 2-1/2 by 2-1/2 inch square, which is why the system has to make the image larger for you.
Now in this forum, the image that I posted was adjusted to 72 dpi, which is the display size of the monitor I am using. The slider set up the correct size requirements for the portrait, but it started with an image that was large enough so that it would work.
When the uploaded image is too small, it has to adjust the size of the image so that the slider can work properly.
With some portraits, I have pulled the image from a printed source (typically a newspaper clipping, and those are very hard to properly adjust, because they are usually just at the lower size limit. In most cases, I try to find a photograph from another source and with todays newspaper digitization programs by various companies, I have been able to come up with a few satisfactory portraits, but certainly not all of them.
Since this is your mother that you are working with, you should be able to scan and original photograph and upload it to your memory gallery, then do what I did and use the portrait tool to center her face in the portrait. Just make sure the original photo is large enough in terms of dpi (300 will works nicely, but I like scanning old photographs at 600 dpi to capture all the detail in the actual photograph) so that you don't have to work with what amounts to being a thumbnail (like those in many obituaries).0 -

Tom Huber said: I'll see what I can do with the photo. It is on an angled board (with respect to the camera), so I'm going to have to play with it a bit to get it back in the correct perspective. Besides Irfanview, I also use GIMP, which is an open source image editor, similar to some of the expensive products.0

Tom Huber said: It took manipulating the photo's perspective with GIMP and then using irfanview to add a white border.
The system wants to size the photo according to the border. If it will not fit within the portrait circle, it will increase the size of the image (I was wrong in my original analysis).
After fixing the image (it really is a thumbnail), I uploaded it to the person you provided the ID for. Then I realized what the system was doing, so deleted that image and went back and used irfanview to add a border. This I uploaded and was able to center into the portrait area.
The image with the border is now in your mother's memories. You can download it and do whatever you want with it. If you get a better photograph, you certainly can replace both the memory and the portrait. All relinquish all rights to the image I uploaded to you.

Tom Huber said: Had I wanted to add more of her in the portrait, I could have added even more white border, and that would have allowed me to post the entire image, including the title. (I'm not sure where that got added, but it must have been coded in the image that I downloaded from your photograph of the display.0

Tom Huber said: Sometimes, it takes me several tries to get it right (as it did with your mother's image). Changing the perspective was the easy part. Sizing and adding border is what took a bit more time.0

Beth Ann Wiseman said: I just got back to this thread and was going to investigate this morning and discovered that Tom had provided an excellent solution, taking the original photo, enhancing it and making it the appropriate size to create a portrait.
That's what I love about this community. Thanks for caring enough to help.0 -
