I don't think the township designation is necessary in this case

    Lafayette is not in Wabash Township, but West Lafayette is. Besides the city, it is also home to Purdue University.

    What is necessary are the specifics. You don't have to enter the name of the township for the user-entered place field, but that doesn't change the standard that has been established. And in the case, West Lafayette is in a different township than Lafayette, separated by the Wabash river.
