Here is another site that explains the fraud: <http://ancestorstealing.blogspot.com/2017/03/shawnee-heritage-by-don-greene-aka.html>
Am I wrong to be frustrated that FamilySearch has no internal policy to deal with something like this?

FYI, I also reported "Shawnee Heritage" to Lulu as it technically violates their Terms and Conditions due to being fraudulent. Maybe that will help speed progress along.

M G, I'd say you're not wrong to be frustrated at all. This is very frustrating. I am sure FamilySearch does not like that you are frustrated, and I think they do want to help. I think it's probably also very complicated for them to try to work out the correct course of action. I'm sure prayers for them are greatly appreciated.

I joined and sent information to them. I saw this post back in 2018, but it just keeps getting worse. Thanks, Marilyn

Thanks for taking time to understand and empathize. It helps.

FYI-I did my internship for BYU at NARA.

Sure thing. I really hope this issue gets resolved soon.

@Teresa Arispe I like your suggestion of adding the correct information in "Memory" and tagging the appropriate individuals. The PDF format ensures that it will not be altered and the information becomes a permanent part of the record for those individuals. A similar, although not permanent, approach would be to add a brief synopsis in the "Life Sketch" with reference to the full information in the "Memory"; not permanent only because others could come in and alter or delete after entry. It would then "flag" researches that there is something amiss in the data (assuming it had again been altered and not corrected.)

I agree, the Life Sketch is also a great place for information that is important to researchers, because it's so "front and center" when you first go to an individual's page. The only problem I see with the Life Sketch is that it is freely editable by users, so one does run the risk of someone deciding to just edit or delete the Life Sketch to their liking, especially if they are one of those people who aren't shy about making "corrections". But otherwise the Life Sketch is a good place to tip researchers off about important considerations when researching a person. I've seen that done for several individuals in my lineage.

Similarly, when I had conflicting pieces of information that I couldn't resolve with one particular individual, when I went to one of several "duplicate" entries, someone had posted clarifying information in the Life Sketch that unraveled all my concerns and resolved my issue. They recognized the duplicates, and the conflicts, and provided the necessary information to put things in the proper order. I believe that it the intended nature of a collaborative, "crowd-sourced" information database. Unfortunately, it can be misused, as MG has experienced.

That's fantastic! Yes, it's great when people collaborate correctly on FS.

I think it is horrible that someone has done this. It really should be a crime to take actual facts and create such false stories about people. I had read the Fake Indian blog after you mentioned the author. I also hope that this can be remedied. Terrible situation with so many facets.

Agreed, Melissa. Speaking as a fiction author myself, it's one thing to create a fictional tribe and present your account as pure fiction for entertainment purposes. It's quite another to present the tribe as real, claim you are descended from them, and then go around changing online pedigrees to involve people and relationships that never existed. It's such a shame that Greene has chosen to misuse his creativity like this.
Well, the nice thing about hoaxes and frauds is that they get exposed eventually. There are lots of critically-thinking people like us in the world who don't take things at face value and like to get to the bottom of something fishy. The key is to make our voices heard enough so that people have ready access to the truth, not just the fraud. I feel confident that eventually enough people will disbelieve Greene that his whole operation will lose traction and fade, just like so many hoaxes have in the past.
Also, as a probably unintended side effect of what he is doing, Greene now has a whole lot of prayers being said on his behalf, and I'm a firm believer in the power of prayer, so that ought to help the matter. 🙂

Thanks for this positive thought. C. S. Lewis said his prayers change him not others. I do pray for Greene because he has poisoned the stream going down hill. I pray others recognize the deceit. And I rejoice that his fraud doesn't change the Savior's atonement for all.

Beautiful thoughts. Thanks for sharing. I'm sure the Lord will get this whole situation sorted out and I think He's pleased with us for trying to be part of the solution.

Whilst I appreciate this forum operates under the auspices of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, may I politely remind LDS users of an item in the "Code of Conduct" relating to posts made here:
"Religion: FamilySearch sites are produced to bring joy to all people. To prevent our community groups from being overpowered with a single-sided religious tone that repels people we want to welcome here, we ask that community members reserve spiritual discussions for those groups whose titles and descriptions specifically invite them."
I have no specific problem with mention of the beliefs of the LDS Church. Indeed, being given certain insights as to Church teaching (especially in relation to genealogy) has helped me empathise with many points that have been raised, here and elsewhere. However, I think it is sometimes forgotten that an extremely large number of FamilySearch users (probably the majority) are not of the same - or even any - religious persuasion.

Whoops, I'm really sorry about that. I'm not sure how I missed that part of the Code of Conduct. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

also note groups like this one below can be used to freely discuss LDS related topics:
