what happens to your familysearch account when you die?

Hello Nancy,
Good question.
What happens to the accounts of deceased users?
The account remains in FamilySearch.org.
When we receive proof of a user's death, we lock the account.
Currently, a person cannot inherit an account.
I think you can have an account for someone in your family that would attach to your relatives.
Memories
When a user passes away, if FamilySearch knows about the death, the system locks the account. All Memories items that the individual contributed remain in our Family Tree database.
This is also true of tags. Others can still see these tagged items but cannot edit them.
If the user has added private memories, those memories are not made public. The system is set to keep private any memories designated by a contributor as private
Thank you.

To clarify - even the account "being closed and locked" - is dependent on someone letting FS know the user is deceased.
For LDS account holders - that happens as the ward clerk marks the membership record as deceased.
BUT for NON LDS accounts - if no one tells FS the user is dead - which is actually the most likely scenario for non LDS accounts - the account continueS to be active and open and non locked.
If a surviving family member has the credentials then the account is still accessible even after the death of the user.

I am well aware of the article "what happens to the accounts of deceased users?" and "What happens to memories submitted by deceased users?"
Many LDS guests are very concerned because their parents or other loved ones have saved Memories to their FamilySearch account without tagging them to anyone. When their loved one dies and the account is "locked" or whatever you call it and those memories are locked away in FamilySearch somewhere and cannot be retrieved.
My guest is suggesting that the next of kin should be granted access to those memories. Or, please put a large banner on the Memories page AND the Memories Gallery notifying guests that any untagged Memories will be locked away forever when they die. Many guests are unaware of this.
I will also add this as a "Suggestion."
