What order to do a multiple merges of persons on the same page. I know how to do merges (yes I find them tricky sometimes) but the order in which it should be done. My example is James Winton 20 May 1733 – Deceased • LK7S-GVJ, can someone help me please

That's an interesting question.

In many of the merges I have done - order has not mattered

but I imagine there might be some cases where it does.

@IslaWinton IslaWinton​ Before I start merging, I write each name(some may vary a little) and their ID down. I look at each of their person pages and tree views to see what relationships and sources might be connected to that ID. Any interesting item I find, I write on my paper by that ID. For example, this one has 2 sets of parents or that one has 23 kids. I know I can view most of this info during a merge but I like to be thorough. I find ones that are not matches this way sometimes. The one that has the most correct/complete family relationships(lines of ancestry and descendants), sources, and memories in it, is the one I merge all the other ones into. As far as the order, once I’ve determined the one that will remain I just start checking off the list I’ve made to make sure I get them all. If I’m interrupted while doing the merging, I’ve got it written down and checked off. I’ll be able to pick up easily where I was when I left it. And then as you know there will be other duplicates of spouses and children that you’ll work through from that. Then the process starts again.

but the underlying question - does ORDER really matter

if I have 10 records to merge - does it really matter which of the 10 I merge first and which last?

yes picking the one that is most complete to start with makes sense - but I am under the impression order doenst really matter.

Maybe you did not read my entire response? Also, I find it helpful if someone gives me their reason why they answered as they did. In this case-after finding the most complete/connected one, just make sure to get them all.

Thank you all for your answers especially Patricia as I can see now I really must be methodical

I should have mentioned that James had 7 wives all same name different ID's with different children, all on the same page. I had not come across this before.

are you saying that because you know that for a fact (that he had 7 wives)

or simply describing what you find in FamilySearch (which may or may not be correct?)

he did not have 7 wives, in his details, he has the same wife but with different ID. What I think has happened, James has been merged only and his wife Anne has not been merged. I will action tomorrow. If you wish to look at the details, his ID is LK7S-GVJ. Cheers Isla Winton

PS on a side note, James and Anne ancestry line will come together at some point. I will be so interested when that happens.
